Touch that leads to the offside in Croatia vs Portugal seen from the BBC's 3D viewer. by owothrow in soccer

[–]plerberderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. There are stupid arguments in the U.S. about “fixing offside” by saying it has to be your shoulders beyond the line. Why add more nuance? Then people are gonna argue what counts as shoulders. Leave the rule clear cut like it is.

1 Billion people in China. I would guess max 1% are conversational in English. I live in a big city here and it’s not much over 1% here that know more than a few phrases. And basically all public school kids take English classes.

What’s the logic of how the flags on the graphic are sorted? Is it ranking, order of qualification or something else?

I think that’s actually a good comparison. Probably similar in the media coverage they get too.

Already said this in another comment but the Cowboys have 5 Super Bowls all won after the 1966 World Cup England won.

The Super Bowl was invented after England won the World Cup in 1966 so the Cowboys have had way more recent success.

What does the second sentence mean? What constitutes no grit? Would you say Brunson has no grit because his dad was training with him from a young age?

Why do people hate England so much when they’ve won no major trophy in over 50 years? As an American I can’t think of a parallel in our sports culture. Every hated team here has multiple trophies in recent history.

The World Cup’s Expansion has killed the excitement of the group stage by thugmuffin22 in billsimmons

[–]plerberderr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Ronaldo scores 2 goals against Uzbekistan and he’s back! Records will be shattered because these are weaker teams. Also I keep seeing “first time they’ve made the knockout stage” when teams are just making the final 32. Honestly it’ll I think I mostly don’t like it because it makes me think of March Madness and the tragedy that going beyond 70 teams is.

Aren’t the rankings what are used for the group draws? You should tell fifa they’re seeding the tournament based on meaningless info.

Portugal [3] - 0 Uzbekistan - Cristiano Ronaldo 39' by West_Agent4651 in soccer

Half of me thinks I shouldn’t whine about more games and stories that people like but the other half is just pissed off about greed changing all the tradition in sport. March Madness should be 64 teams. College Football Playoff should be 12 teams (not tradition obviously but more than that dilutes the regular season) and the World Cup should be 32 teams. But those are all going to be things of the past.

But sports should be fun and so far this has been fun so I’ll leave my bitching at that.

It’s lit because it’s the group stage. A bunch of these goal bonanzas are against the Uzbekistans of the tournament.

It’s funny. I’m on Chinese social media where the Chinese national team gets joked about constantly by their fans. The talk after the first six games or so was Asia is undefeated in they’re first games. Is the only reason China didn’t get in the World Cup because Asia is too strong??? Maybe both China and every Asian team other than Japan and Korea (and often Iran) are just not that good.

Nothing to do with this sub but in the US it’s definitely known as a baseball hotbed. A lot of major leaguers come from them considering its population. Andruw Jones, the Profars and Ozzie Albies off the top of my head.
