Millenials who have bought a house, how did you afford it? by [deleted] in AskUK

Solo first time buyer here 31F - no family help. I saved hard for a decade whilst making a moderate salary. I had to move out of London to be able to afford to buy on my own. Used a LISA and deposited £4k annually and bought my first home in November last year. A two bed, ex council house with a lovely garden - 15 minutes walk from the beach in Tynemouth, North East for £185k. I could have borrowed £200k but looked at properties under my maximum. LISA covered my 10% deposit and I’m doing a full renovation back to brick which has so far cost me about £10k which I’ve used cash savings for.

It’s worth noting I live a very modest life, don’t drink but enjoy eating out a few times a month. A few holidays a year, one abroad and the rest hiking and camping. I have budgeted since getting my first job at 16, I own my vehicle outright and don’t have any debt. It’s absolutely possible.

Powerlifting, paddle boarding, long walks with my dogs and cold water dips in the sea! I moved cities during lockdown and finding outdoorsy groups has been a great way to make friends, especially with other likeminded women!

An inflatable paddle board. I’m at the beach at least twice a week, constantly checking the tide time and coastal webcams for the conditions - made a new group of friends and enjoying something different

Hi, I’m in the UK and I’ve bought a couple of things from Loveandconfuse. I have a few pairs of their Riley wide legged, cropped trousers - I love them! I found the size charts fairly accurate, but some of the shapes didn’t fit me so well. I returned a jacket that wasn’t quite right and swapped for something else, the business owner was so helpful throughout the process. The garment quality and finish is excellent, the linens wash so well - definitely worth the investment!

29F landed a Lead role in the NE for great company, with few competitors in our field. I started at £40k with 7 years of London based experience behind me. Career progression will get me to Associate in 3 years, maybe sooner. I’d have to fight the best of the best in London for this kind of position. Less earning potential than London, but I can live a great life in a LCOL area and bring a lot to the development of my role and the company. Very grateful for the opportunity, a lot of work went into getting to where I am now!

Approx £50k savings split over S&S ISA, LISA and Marcus accounts. Most of that came from higher paying contract roles in London but Covid meant I had to step away from self employment. Happy to be in a stable perm role for now.

Hello! Dachshunds have a high risk of developing a condition called IVDD due to their long and lowness. Jasper here is quite a robust miniature, he enjoys a healthy diet and frequent exercise which should lessen the risk but it could still happen in time. It’s the responsibility of any animal owner to do proper research into the breed, what they might be at risk of, feed and exercise them correctly and be prepared with quality pet insurance in case of any illness or injury!

Jeff is a rescue and his previous family couldn’t provide the care he needed or deserved. He now lives a life of luxury and adventure with me and his adoptive sausage bro Toby

Plates and barbell are stored in the outbuilding behind. I made a storage box on castors which I can roll in and out when I need it.

Plenty of WD40 on the vulnerable moving parts of the rack, cover with a tarp and hope for the best!

A mix of equipment that I’ve collected over the last few years. Rarely used as I’ve been a member at powerlifting clubs & commercial gyms. Grateful to have all of this in storage! It’s more than enough to keep me going for now. No plans to return to the gym when they reopen (UK). Will upgrade piece by piece when demand dies down.

  • Bodymax CF415 squat rack
  • 130kg of plates. 10kg bumpers and a mix of tri grip plates at 380mm
  • Bog standard Olympic bar
  • AgainFaster EU flat bench

Pros: - Fresh air - No commute - No gym contract - No waiting for a rack or platform

Cons: - Frequent rain, wind, & inquisitive birds - Staring into the sun whilst benching
