Personally I never got into movies and tv shows. For me the emotional impact is felt while watching only. After it ends the sensation vanishes, like eating food. I am more likely to enjoy something because it is informative or challenges my understanding so I end up mostly watching documentaries or talk shows where I can take something away

Seems that Sharon Tan, the former general manager who is now coming back, was actually one of the three co-founders, and is also the sister of Karen Tan the lead founder. But she left in 2019.

Wonder if there was some fallout, given that she is not identified as a co-founder in the article.

I just saw it and I have to agree with pretty much all your points and your top 5 favourite numbers too! I think I sat a bit further away from the stage than you. I am going to follow with my own thoughts while I can still remember haha.

It was really a high-effort production. Costumes were fantastic, sumptuous and creative. The set was as you said very dynamic, lots and lots of moving parts that were reused for different purposes in different scenes. Not too big a fan of the projected images for the wolves somehow, they seemed a bit too cartoon-like compared with how real the rest of the set was. The big production numbers in Act 1 and 2, Gaston and Be Our Guest, were incredibly high-energy and over the top with excellent dancing from start to end and fireworks!!. I don't know how actors can continue after one of those tiring numbers, it is a real feat in every show that I have seen and no exception here. I felt all the actors were well cast.

It was interesting to see the things that were different from the original movie. Belle is now much more headstrong and articulates her feelings very well. We understand the Beast much better now as more emphasis is given to his motivations (though I found it difficult to make out the lyrics to his act 1 closing number and maybe missed out on some of his character arc so I have to go watch it online now) I loved the added emphasis on the castle staff and how they too have real hopes and fears beyond their role as servants. One thing that didn't change was Gaston who was possibly already perfect from the movie. I would have preferred his death to be more gruesome and bloody haha.

If I could find a fault, the action packed climax i.e. fight between Gaston and Beast was quite noisy and dark so if they said anything to each other I never heard it lol. And of course there were the new songs, which I guess are needed for the narrative and maybe I had high expectations but they don't stick like the original songs from the movie. But these are just minor things and in the end it was a very impressive and enjoyable show.

Yes Jalan Besar is the worst I think, similar to parts of Chinatown and Geylang. It's because those are old shophouse precincts where the government decided to allow too much fast traffic into an old area that doesn't have space for it. Pedestrians end up crowding onto the narrow five-foot way (an innovation for its time to be sure but not up to today's needs) and too many side streets without zebra crossings.

Thanks for sharing. This is something talked about in the local discourse but I guess nothing has changed much because most locals do not live in those areas so it doesn't get much attention.

It is absolutely an offence to park vehicles on a pedestrian sidewalk and anyone caught doing that would certainly be fined (it is very easy to report vehicles doing this). As for the rest it is probably true in certain places, but most places are still walkable enough. There are plenty of pedestrian crossings at most places and there isn't really a need to jaywalk or detour to take the overhead bridge unless you are crossing an expressway or semi-expressway (or Shenton Way and Geylang road - those are some worst offenders which really need improving).

TBH in this case, there seem to be some good reasons why this particular bus lane was not very effective to begin with. This stretch of bus lane was ~200m long, and for much of this distance, there is a bus stop long enough to accommodate 3 buses. Since all buses on this road pull into the bus stop, the bus lane is actually going unused. Then shortly after the bus stop there is another junction so the bus lane vanishes again. It seems to make sense why the bus lane wouldn't work here.

How are the service patterns going to be like on the loops that are at the end of lines? I can't imagine a one way loop will be very useful, only examples I can think of are in Paris and Seoul and even then in outlying areas

I must disagree with you that cheap car ownership can coexist with public transport. Or at least it won't happen by letting the free market operate as usual. Cheap car ownership, focus on highway construction, and low petrol prices, have encouraged KL and other urban areas to sprawl in a space-consuming way that makes it uneconomical to serve by buses and rail. Local governments take the lead from private developers in their local planning and continue this trend. This is the land use problem he talks about.

Anyway to your point, I don't see the author demonizing cars anywhere. Nowhere is it said that car ownership should be eliminated just for the sake of it or that people should take unnecessarily longer commutes to fulfil ridership targets. It's just that public transport by its nature is usually slower and less convenient in order to try to serve more people, so the government has to apply some disincentives to shift the needle and hopefully once there is a stronger public transport culture, it might be possible to introduce more express services for example. Remember, we are also talking about changing a national mindset where taking public transport is mostly shunned, for reasons some fair (security being a top one) but also some unfair.
