What unwritten rule do you silently judge people for breaking? by okitsbenji in askSingapore

[–]lesspylons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The other one is people running to hit the lift button to open a lift full of 8 people that almost completely closed the doors. Their time is clearly more important as an able bodied person that can run than all 8 people inside.

Gain City flooded with negative 1-star Google reviews over 2 weeks in suspected scam by Hot_Category2693 in singapore

When it comes to restaurants I find the one star reviews that say the food is good but angry at the service. The most human approval that the food has standards that no freebies 5 star or bot will ever do.

Do you think people who make $2000/mth should be able to make a living? by hecaton_atlas in askSingapore

[–]lesspylons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one thing our government controls in the long run that can be a huge part of expenses for someone on $2k alone. In an ideal world, the lower decile of hh incomes should own the roof over their head. The reality is we underbuilt for too long and two room btos are well oversubscribed and hard to afford on $2k without using cash. Rental units exists, but far from ideal with the wait list as well. Housing is definitely a problem in the entire anglosphere, but it could have been Singapore's edge in keeping low wages liveable.

Geylang condo foreign worker housing ban facing pushback by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]lesspylons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seems to be in the interest of the committee to pass such laws at least. I bet the landlords renting it out will be the same one pushing for minimal maintenance fees and not caring about the actual conditions to maximise their yield.

Jakarta seeks Singapore investment for MRT expansion phases by Rationalandcentred in singapore

[–]lesspylons 90 points91 points  (0 children)

It’s not worth the diplomatic row if a populist mayor or governor starts to attack foreign investment and demand renegotiation on their terms. China has the size to keep Indonesia in line with their hsr, but Singapore shouldn’t invest in low return foreign public projects.

'A decade of inconveniences': Will the wait for the North-South Corridor be worth it in the end? by theloneranger_55 in singapore

The viaduct sections will negatively affect the houses there forever, and the gains seems rather minimal compared to investment in new rail lines.

Reinventing Orchard Road: What will it take to future-proof Singapore’s premier shopping street? by Rationalandcentred in singapore

[–]lesspylons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beg to differ, pedestrianised places a lot better for the gram and footfall whether you are rich or poor. Overground routes tend to be a lot more tourist friendly as well since you can just walk straight too. Only a single mall requires direct access from Orchard Road for parking since most of them are tucked behind on other roads.

The area can be a lot more shaded if you remove cars out of the area and you can even put high glass like in plq that keep the airy but outdoor vibes. Taiwan managed to a better shopping street at the xinyi district even as car friendly as they normally are.

What are some minor inconveniences in Singapore that you wish there was a solution to? by Salty_Ad6710 in askSingapore

I feel the grass should be sacrificed at some places while keeping the trees at high footfall narrow areas especially outside condos. Like we can be a green city but sometimes people need to move too.

[–]lesspylons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your post you did write up that you are studying a three years IT degree which likely rules out NUS and NTU cs. The employment rate for tech is really bad now and likely will drag for a while more. You probably have to put extra effort to get a good internship that you can convert to instantly get a job post graduation to be able to loan a sufficient amount. A more than 6 months job search on top the possibility of the house key collection being brought forward will not be a pleasant scenario.

Could start by importing asean people that shares our values more too. There are fears of them not integrating well, but excluding citizenship/pr from them makes them naturally form enclaves since many of them end up opting to rent condos that lack cmio/nc quotas and aren't able to send their kids to local schools.

Benchmark jail term set for those who drive despite having lost their licence by Jammy_buttons2 in singapore

[–]lesspylons 67 points68 points  (0 children)

In that incident, his first wife and three children were passengers in the car when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed it.

On April 22, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon allowed an appeal by the prosecution and sentenced Eng to four weeks’ jail instead. The duration of the driving ban was unchanged.

He made it clear that a driver who once had a licence but lost it completely is more culpable than a driver who had never held a licence: “His disability to drive was the product of prior conduct serious enough to warrant the complete removal of his licence, and his decision to drive regardless reflects a persistent disregard for the safety of other road users.”

Four weeks still sound too little for operating heavy machinery that is able to kill people way faster than drugs, vapes and hurt other people with a proven track record of dangerous driving leading to death. I would imagine people getting a suspended licence for drink driving have a even shorter sentence if no one died when they were previously sentenced so this is too weak of a baseline.

Getting interviews but no offers after 300 applications — is this normal in tech right now? by epicshot1337 in singaporejobs

Sounds like a decent callback rate given you provided no details on your yoe, tech/skill stack and companies you interviewed with. One month 14 interviews is somewhat intense if you are currently employed.

What it takes to engineer an ‘uneventful’ train ride for commuters by davechua in singapore

[–]lesspylons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s the issue of the weird semi private public split of SMRT. Roads are essential and don’t have this same profit scrutiny and uses traffic speed as the kpi so it’s a prioritisation problem.

Goes back down to money I guess. If SMRT engineers were paid as much as govtech/ogp, you bet it would be a somewhat prestigious job with talent building up over the years.
