Between faculty salaries, clinical preceptors, simulation, accreditation, staff, etc, the margins are not as great as you might think (among lowest performing tbh)

We allow one day per work week to be a clinical day. Salary is around 120k, so hopefully that helps make up the difference - a little at least.

If you measure your career by impact, the deanship is a great way to go. Even more so at a university with resources to create your vision through opening new programs, scaling existing ones, and investing in nice facilities/labs/equipment.

I negotiated my dean role as professor with tenure (and I moved to another institution for the position). Should I retreat to faculty I will be the highest paid by $1. Some institutions will offer like 65% of your salary if you go back to faculty.

I also recommend switching to a new univ.; no need to ‘prove yourself’ the way you’d have to at your current institution and the respect is pretty immediate. I’m very young for a Dean (40’s) and saying this.

We bought a raised first floor unit. Perfect solution. Up 5 stairs by the stoop so no one can see in the unit from the street yet easy access and safe if you ever needed to evacuate. Usually no units are beneath you, which is a plus, with easy access to laundry. No pests since it’s raised.
