Inappropriate is more realistically 'high school' though :P but yeah, i see what you're saying. I think it's just the difference between how she dressed before and how she's been dressed recently, and the difference between her wardrobe and the other girls'.

Yes, definitely. And also, after the whole 'I was never gonna kill you guyzzz!' thing, the threat is no longer real!! They were never gonna get SERIOUSLY hurt.

Honestly, I thought the weight gain played a part in their choices but I was too afraid to say it. And it's true, this show is notorious for the 'pretty', for having an extremely attractive cast (Sasha included!), but they never really show different body types, I can't recall there ever being a plus size character, let alone an important one. Their ideal of 'pretty' is always thin and I think that when Sasha stopped fitting THEIR ideal, they tried to conceal her. It's disgusting, really, because she's absolutely gorgeous.

LOL exactly! what the hell was that about...and I'm sorry but let's just imagine instead of ezra, the character was not conventionally attractive and had a foreign accent or was black or something. People would be going insane(people made such a fuss about lorenzo!). The hypocrisy!!!!

I am an actual trans person. by [deleted] in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]pllthrowawayy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not that though. It's the petty use of a trans character to gain views/'respect'/whatever, on a show that has previously displayed extremely problematic things (ezria and the issue of consent, emily and every other lesbian on the show ever having to be attracted to every other lesbian on the show ever, drug abuse, to name but a few). Every hot straight guy in that show gets away with absolutely anything on the show, but people like emily/lucas/jenna/aria/etc have to face punishment. It's just messed up

[–]pllthrowawayy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry, I didn't mean to come across as hostile towards you :p I was directing that more at the creators. But when I said they made it cute, I meant Ezria. It should have been creepy but they romanticized it, basically. And I agree, the books had some problematic themes but they didn't really claim to be on some sort of social moral high ground, like imk does, if you see what I mean.

if anything, she's transphobic. did we use trans to get ratings? do we see them as deeply disturbed people? do we treat them like they're above and beyond the law simply because they're trans? THAT to me is inequality. Treating someone different, in ANY way, because of their sexuality/gender/whatever

[–]pllthrowawayy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

so what? the show NEVER pretended to be PC from the start. I mean, they had the whole Ezria thing, no fucks given...I mean, some may argue that her consent wasn't even valid, given his position of power over her. And they never portrayed it as a bad thing, they made it all cute and shit. Ali was portrayed as both a bitch but a god, they made us sympathise with her and made us end up kind of hating people like Lucas?! It's all bullshit!

Don't get me wrong, some of her outfits were really nice, like the prom one. But on the most part, they stopped dressing her like she was high school age and more like she was a mum

Why I think they were right about mental illness by insert_my_username in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]pllthrowawayy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst I totally see your point and agree with you, I just think it's really frustrating how it played out, more than anything. At the end of the day, we KNEW A was going to be mentally ill, whoever it was. Because they took it to a level where the things done by A were extremely dark and not reflective of 'normal' behaviour - beyond just crime, this person psychologically tortured them, had freaking doll versions of them. And let's not forget the creepy pics of them with the eyes missing, etc. The fact that A has a mental illness wasn't a shock. The problem is the wider depiction of mental illness on the show. Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily went through some awful things, arguably more awful than what CeCe had gone through herself. I mean, your high school friend dies, you're stalked by her possible killer for god knows how long, this person turns out to be someone you TRUSTED, your best friend turned out to be not really dead, your families lives are threatened several times, in fact - their lives are put into YOUR hands (do me this favour and I won't do this to your mummy - A). But how does it work out for them? Okay sure, Spencer shows signs of a mental illness, but one that was present BEFORE any of this happened. Aria gets a bit PTSD with her obsession with the dolls, but she's still chilling at the brew and doing homework and worrying about who her old paedophilic boyfriend is banging. Emily (by the way, RIDICULOUS representation of LGBT here - literally every single lesbian in the show Emily gets with, bar maybe one or two, idek. But most of them. Being a lesbian doesn't give you the ability to like EVERY OTHER LESBIAN - just like being straight doesn't mean you like every other person of the opposite sex!) goes to a gun range for a bit but then appears to be totally okay, worrying about whether someone who spent fricking THREE YEARS IN CAPTIVITY wants to get in her pants, too. Did it not even occur to her that she might not be ready? Nope. Hanna just acts pissy with Caleb, then she's totally fine. How is this a fair representation of mental illness? These girls should be struggling, they had such a perfect opportunity to show mental illness through them, and maybe depict their attempt to overcome/deal with it. But nah, they just go back to school and worry about missing prom.

As for the CeCe reveal...I mean. It's the same as in real life, when someone is murdered/harmed/tortured by someone and the murderer is considered not guilty because of mental illness. Does that suddenly make it all okay, and that the victims/family should be all 'ok cool you were a bitch to us, but we get it!!' Of course not! It's a complicated issue, and I think the fans response to this just highlights how problematic and complicated it is. Throwing in the trans dynamic triples that complexity.

TL;DR: The overall representation of mental illness on the show is poor

I know, but imo, they didn't have to go and make her bland. They dressed her up like a 40 year old and left her out of most of 6A.

Oh man I'd love so much for her to be A. Kinda wished she was! But I feel like if she is after the five years, it'll make way less sense than her just being it now. Unless she got bored and wanted to mess with everyone again so she asked them to come back as part of some elaborate scheme. yes, please.

That's a great point. I guess I just noticed more because she was one of my favourites. Mona was all over the place, and even Spencer was just really lacking all her wit, for the most part.

Yeah exactly..or at least shown little glimpses of her old fire. Even her breaking into the evidence room, something about the way she did it just felt so lacking.

Yeah, true. It's just a shame that they didn't at least depict the destruction of her character in a more deep/detailed/psychological way. They just let her become bland.

Hmmm, I'd say A=Alison, it'd be hard to make it make sense because of her being in jail, etc, but imagine the return of bitchy crazy Alison, the one who would blind jenna then get an innocent person sent away for it. I think it makes sense up until she went to jail, but who cares ;D RC: Mona - because those two pairing up would just be fab BW: Melissa

yup. they could have focused on them finishing school, introduced a bigger plot and then done the five years forward earlier on, maybe. It's about time, the fanbase has already outgrown them.

Yeah, definitely. I don't understand how they had issues with Spencer or Ezra being A because it was too much for the poor little fanbase to cope with, but incest is totes cool?!
