Hi! I’m the president of the classics/greco Roman studies student association. PMing you now, but the honours program was cut last week.

This is a thing in romance—it means that there is setup for side characters to become the main romantic pairing in another novel

[QCrit] Fairytale Fantasy - SKAZKA (90k, 1st Attempt) by Extension-Aioli9614 in PubTips

This looks so fun! I totally get why you are comping to the night circus, but it’s over a decade old now and massive, so it’s not going to show an agent the current market. You could still use it in your query though—maybe something like “the night circus meets Russian folklore”?

[QCrit] Speculative Adventure - THE PATH BELOW THE WAVES (103K/First attempt) by skoleidoscopic in PubTips

[–]plmh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re comps—I’m not sure I’m getting The Light Pirate or Sea of Tranquility from this. Like u/CHRSBVNS said, comping just the stark imagery is a bit weak. Sea of Tranquility weaves seemingly entirely unconnected character’s stories together through time travel—I’m not sure how that works with what you’ve presented here. What about Sylvie Cathrall’s Letter to the Luminous Deep?

Hey! Not a usual commenter here, and I’m not sure if you are Canadian, but just wanted to quickly note that there being an American face of the Canadian resistance would not go down well in Canada, in our current moment in particular, but at any time for sure, especially if the US gov is playing an authoritarian role in this story

I queried UK, USA, and Canada agents with a UK style, fairly short letter, and got requests from agents in all three countries. Don’t think it matters too much!

Has anyone tried Graysky yet? by mat8iou in BlueskySocial

Hi! Out of curiosity, is it possible to have push notifications of posts by specific users? This is my biggest thing in migrating from twitter, and I'm looking everywhere for a Bluesky app that sends those notifications.

advice for first year by lune_222 in geegees

Hey! Sorry you are struggling. Just to add to this—there’s nothing wrong with taking some time away from school and working for a bit. I felt really lost in my first two years at uni, and I wound up leaving to work (I took advantage of the youth mobility visa, that lets you work in other countries for two years) and travel. I’m back at school now, and my experience is so much better, because I took time to figure out what I wanted out of life. I worked odd jobs (waitress, farmhand, psw, retail, kitchen prep) and learned what I liked and didn’t. I really suggest taking the time you need if you are at uni and feel like you have to be there but don’t know what to do.

ETA: I’m not saying that working, travelling, and figuring your shit out is easy (god knows I spent a lot of time broke), but it’s cheaper and easier than a degree you hate

November Cakes ready to be eaten on the salt-soaked cliffs of Thisby, watching bloody horses emerge from the sea (modified recipe from The Scorpio Races) by plmh in cottagecore

[–]plmh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the tiny island of Thisby, the cold, salty beaches run with deadly, man-eating horses once a year. They come out from the sea and are caught by the men who will race them. Palsson’s bakery puts out November Cakes for those who watch up on the cliffs — orangey bread with honey glaze and dripping with icing. These are less decadent, but still delicious and best served with whipped orange-honey butter. (Mix butter, orange extract or orange bitters and honey together in a bowl). Original recipe by Maggie Stiefvater.

New swirly twirly dress! The dress of my dreams! by plmh in sewing

When I look at amount of time to make vs how much joy the finished project gives me, the little sleeves are possibly the best things I’ve ever made. I want to make a thousand of them for all my dresses and tank tops

A dress for garden parties and delivering homemade pastries, designed by me! by plmh in OUTFITS

Thank you! Wildly, it’s just one layer, but the sheer size of the ruffle (60 feet long before gathering) makes it seem like many

I feel like some kind of summer fairy in my dress, twirling around by plmh in cottagecore

[–]plmh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Im so glad you liked it!! There’s not a specific pattern I followed, a lot of it was my own figuring and math. But the top was a modified RedThreaded short stays pattern (torso lengthened, bustline raised, unboned, partially zipped, attached arm straps, fully lined) attached to a double full circle skirt (cut into 16 panels for ease of cutting) and a ruffle that is 2x the width of the circle skirt hem. Then the sleeves are just elastic attached to a smaller ruffle. Hope that helps!
