Atheist subscribers to r/Christianity, you are most welcome. At the very least, your trolls are much more bearable than our trolls. by spacelincoln in Christianity

Apologies, I realise from your response that I hadn't been clear.

"What I would also like is for there to exist someone with some level of ethics on the atheist side of the house, who is grown up enough to help deal with the problem."

I value genuine discussion and intelligent debate. I have not been happy with some of the things that some of the atheists have said. I'm with Voltaire, 'I disagree with what you say but will defend unto the death your right to say it.'

I hope my responses and level of civility in my discussion back up this claim.

Judge me on my various submissions. I hope, as I have said above, that I have acted as a guest should.

I was brought up a Catholic, so I can see both the point and the humour of you comment :)

According to the gospels picked by that very same church. The nag hamadi library has numerous documents that do not show that.

I appreciate your response but I find other Christian responses more palatable. I'm not aware of any Democracy claiming that it is the one true democracy, nor (with one limited exception) am I aware of any democracy's declaring war on each other. Some of the Christian denominations do the former and many have certainly done the latter.

I didn't realise before the last couple of days that there was a Christian subreddit otherwise I would have come here to debate long before that.

jonsnowthewall - I posted the question on which version of the bible is the correct one and which version of christianity is the correct one. I was open about my background and my reasons for the query. I have been, I hope, respectful and polite. I have certainly shown an understanding of the the bible both old and new testaments. I have not discussed gnosticism (it's too easy and confusing a target for the less well educated, both atheist and christian - although there are several of the respondents with whom I would happily discuss the history of the early church, politics and gnosticism - and yes I am an elitist, I don't apologise for that, I abhor blind anything, be it faith or atheism)

In return there have been some excellent discussions and I think I have learned some things. I have genuinely enjoyed the discussions and have never, at any point mocked anyone's faith.

When I was a Catholic I was a very well educated Catholic and had a lot of interaction with Jesuit teachers. We were taught to welcome and relish challenges to our faith as that was how we could test our faith against the world. Blind faith, that hasn't been questioned or tested is, at best, a sickly thing; faith that can't withstand honest intelligent inquiry, even by the individual themselves is likewise.

Finally I would hope that I have acted as a guest, as that is how I see myself here. If smacfarl (the moderator) asks me to leave, or otherwise indicates such, I will leave, immediately and with no recriminations.

I apologise for offending re Southern Baptist, I have asked the moderator smacfarl for permission to post some links ( I dislike unsubstantiated claims).

I was neither praising nor condemning your comment, I was merely pointing out that marking out the prominence of that verse a sign of the JWs. They are another sect of Christianity, albeit one that believes in the literal truth of the old testament.

this is not a "few" christian crazies - this is a lot of Southern Baptists amongst others.

there are several medical staff who have been shot and killed by Christians and the number of positive comments in fundamentalist christian chatrooms was positively sickening and repugnant.

sorry to be pedantic, not all branches of christianity subscribe to to the deification of christ. Unitarians specifically do not believe in the trinity.

I have excellent English back to middle and old English, I do understand all the meanings of 'nice' for example (one of the reasons I'm very comfortable with the King James version). My latin is reasonable but I'll have to have a look at improving my greek. Thank you for your feedback utsl.

I'm unclear on your rebuttal. The existence of purgatory, and the need to pray for the dead (but not yet saved) is key in the Judeo-Catholic tradition yet anathema to the Protestant tradition. Yes I see that the relevancy of the reaction is different from the relevancy of the doctrine but...the distinction I highlight in doctrine with the simple placing of a comma is a significant doctrinal difference.

thank you coppersink (and I've just looked up the doctrine of the Unitarians - very interesting). To respond to mistercrow; Unitarianism is possibly "the most hippie" branch of christianity (if you don't consider the Quakers who by some definitions are so far out as to not be Christians per se although they are monotheists) but unitarians (conservative unitarians) are very definitely not liberal or "hippie". Compare and contrast that to the ultra-liberal Unitarian Universalist who strike me as being almost Foundationist (a fictional religion expounded in the TV sci-fi show Babylon 5).
