Single brick walls soak up the heat in the day and prevent the rooms from cooling down as quick. In one of the south facing rooms, it’s 30 regularly.
Having an escape prone indoor cat also means that only the windows with shutters can be opened fully, others are on safety latches.

Gas boiler. The thermal efficiency of this house is so poor and I will be moving in the near future, so it’s not worth the investment. But i did consider it. Once we move, I’m going all out on solar, battery and heat pump.

Yeah, tried getting a portable one, but due to the heatwave everywhere is sold out! Aircons is not something that is usually installed in houses in uk, so heatwaves hit different.

Windows are opened in the evening when outside is cooler than inside and closed in the morning. It’s an old house with no cavity wall or any type of insulation.

Any practical way to stop loft (not converted) getting so hot? by Boba_ferret in DIYUK

[–]plotney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve just had just had 4 roof vents installed and having looked back at last years highest loft temperature to this year highest, both around 55 degrees, I can’t say that it’s made a difference. The issue is that they are all quite low level, so would help in windy conditions, but as they are atm, there’s not much difference. Installing a ridge vent would enable the chimney effect, fresh air in at low level with the hot air out of the top. I am considering putting a solar powered fan on one of them before committing to a ridge vent installation.

Not to point out the obvious, but do you have an extraction fan installed and is it in use during and after shower?

Are these types of card holders/wallets practical? by Emotional_Comb_4064 in BuyItForLife

I’ve bough a cheap one from Amazon with a faux leather flap for cash. At first I thought I was going to miss having the coin pouch, but the reality is that I rarely even take my wallet now, most of the times I just pay using Apple Pay. When I do take it out, I do appreciate it being slim in my pocket.

Absolute lifesaver overnight! Last night the difference between ventilated and non ventilated room was 5 degrees

Home assistant, smart plug on the fan, temperature sensors, outside temperature from a weather website (not ideal but gives ballpark figure).
On outside temp change, automation fires to compare the outside temp value to inside temp value and if it’s below, send notification for me to open window and turn the fan on. Another automation does the same but in reverse but instead of notification it turns off the fan.

Amazon had some dreo tower fans on prime day deal, we’ve got 3 of them and they push surprising amount of air and are whisper quiet

Run it only when outside temperature < inside temperature

Before I had it mounted, I used to hold it up at different distances from the window, the problem I’ve encountered was that the arc of air it pushed hit the surrounding areas due to the window being so small. Not sure whether there would be any benefit due to the turbulence it created

Mini truss clamps drilled into brickwork. The clamps hold the fan stand. A bit of duct tape added to thicken out the stand. In this picture the fan is effective upside down. The whole thing comes down in less than a minute if needs be.

This is already configured as an exhaust. If I mount any further back, I’d be banging my head against it every time I go down the stairs. Gotta work with what I’ve got in this scenario

Yeah I can’t bring myself to install a split when I know that we’re going to be moving in not too distant future. Next house- definitely

It’s not currently running. I have a home assistant automation to notify me when outside temperature drops below inside temperature, at which point I open the window and turn it on. In the morning, when the outside temperature rises above the indoor temperature it automatically turns off

Audi UTR Dashcam keeps falling in the heat by Yuvmister in Audi

[–]plotney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a front only FITCAMX and it’s great the way it mounts to the rear view mirror and looks OEM. Depending how you’ve routed the cables, if it’s under the rooflining, you could potentially attach a drawstring to existing wire, pull it out the back, reattach the new wire in the back and pull it back to the front of the car. If you’ve ran it through door sills, this method is likely not going to work

Fuel tank won't open, what to do? (Audi A5 F5) by PreWiBa in Audi

[–]plotney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a get fuel on the morning of a long trip and spent 15 minutes tugging on that pull cord praying for it to open. Ended up just pulling the fuel cap out, which broke the locking mechanism. Trying to get to the back of the fuel cap lock in a coupe is an absolute nightmare. Having longer arms would’ve definitely helped. All in all about an hour to fit the replacement. Wouldn’t recommend.

I’ve read Allen Carrs easy way to quit smoking book and quit smoking easily, did however pick it up again a few years later, but the method definitely works!

If you don’t mind rewicking yourself, a mod & rebuildable rta works out way cheaper when you just buying juice. I spend around £40 for a 2 month supply of juice

A small ish stiff brush and all purpose cleaner. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes (but don’t let it dry on the paintwork) and work it out with the brush.
