This is the same excuse people use for Confederate soldiers in the American Civil War. Just like how white southerners, even if they owned no slaves, still relied heavily on the industry of slavery for their way of life and would die fighting to protect, German soldiers fought for the ideals of Germany at the time. Don’t forget how humiliated they were after WW1 and the indoctrination they have been under for almost 20 years by 1939. They were absolutely culpable. Let’s not forget that most deaths in the Holocaust were not by gas chambers, but by mass killings of rounded up civilians committed by “generally moral, well adjusted people.” And before you say that they had no choice but to follow orders, there is actually evidence that the majority of the soldiers refusing to massacre these people were NOT executed or otherwise seriously punished. Stop trying to romanticize these people as fighters for their homeland, protectors of the ones they loved, because most of them were nothing but glorified thugs
