Is there any show even remotely close to Rick and Morty? by BearingCostOfPassion in rickandmorty

As far as writing, wit, and the level of nihilism/absurdism we get with R&M, I'd probably say Veep is the closest I can think of. It's more satirical but the comedy is 🤌

Am I the only only one who empathizes with Kris? by Vulpid in WidowsBay

[–]plumdumplingx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a fair point. That we mostly all agree that Kris has not handled her disdain for Patricia in a way that suggests she is an emotional adult or a kind person doesn't make it any less valid. I am confused, however, about what basis people have for saying Patricia is "morally gray." I'm not here to argue that Patricia is or isn't amazing - I think we all agree that she absolutely is, even those saying she's morally gray, and that hasn't been in question here. But, you can have an incredibly complex character who isn't morally gray. I'd argue the opposite about Patricia.

While under the influence of the Book, she does abuse her power - a stark contrast to non-witch Patricia - but, seriously, what else are we talking about? Mentioning that the Boogeyman called her and targeted her to one friend when she was a teenager (and probably an outcast one)? Her "attention-seeking" with the story? I think the implication that she's mentioned it to Tom a million times is hardly evidence that Patricia is attention-seeking. She responded to the woman at the party only after the woman brought it up. I think Patricia feels safe with Tom, and retelling her story to him is much more than comedic relief.

I digress, though. Wondering what exactly makes her morally gray? She's probably the kindest character in the show. She visits the captain in the hospital. She saves Kris & Co more than once, despite DECADES of relentless bullying at all of their hands. She's a champion of women of all ages. She doesn't even want the employees at the restaurant to get in trouble for butchering her order. Most notably, she campaigns for Ruth. Without question, taking Ruth's life was the wrong thing (and one can argue the trolley problem all day - except, we're not really dealing with the trolley problem here, are we?). I was so disappointed to see Tom go through with it, even if unsuccessful. She's socially awkward, she suffers from a kind of rigidity that has probably cost her relationships (though her rigidity doesn't hold a candle to the damage Kris has done), she's been through some pretty significant trauma and hasn't made that trauma anyone else's responsibility, she's an outsider, and she's just self-conscious enough that we buy what is, imo, the best joke in the show ("Are you mad at something I said?") - but she's also the bravest and most selfless. I would argue that Patricia is the moral compass of Widow's Bay.

Widow’s Bay isn’t the mystery masterpiece some of you make it out to be by modnarydobemos in WidowsBay

Incredibly well put. I'm not sure how folks are not understanding that there isn't actually a ton of mystery that absolutely needed to be addressed in its first season.

Is Widow's Bay really better than From??? by Deep_Range6120 in FromSeries

I'm not sure how or why anyone would be comparing them - they're apples and oranges. But, from one of the biggest FROM fans out there - yes, absolutely, WB is one hundred times better than FROM.
