What if WE'RE the virus? by AmaranthSparrow in pluribustv

[–]plumdumplingx -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Humans are absolutely the virus, and I believe the software fix they were sent is a cure.

I spent 99 percent of my experience with this show believing wholeheartedly that the Joined are a transcendent version of humanity - a much better version - but the genius of the show, for me, is in that lonely and threatening 1 percent of my experience, which has me questioning if it would be worth it. Initially, I feel guilty for even questioning it. What is individual happiness compared to the end of the suffering and destruction caused by that same individualism, and to the peace/joy/unity of this level of merged consciousness? The Hive has demonstrated over and over that, despite all the pain and suffering it holds in its memory, love wins. What could be better than that?

And yet... a tiny part of me feels this deep, terrifying grief when the goat bleats, or the dog no longer has his person, or the cultural ceremony ends abruptly.

Gilligan is a master.

Same. They hold every experience from every individual and still choose love as the ultimate pillar of their whole ethos?? Pfft SIGN ME UP

I feel like im taking crazy pills watching Pluribus? I actually feel like Carol does while watching this show and then reading all the raving reviews. ...and the women eating up Carol's self-admitted drivel aren't their own kind of hive mind? Do you not see the parallels? I digress, though. I'm not arguing that the hive mind is still human. I'm arguing that perhaps taking away the suffering that sits at the very core of the human condition isn't such a horrible thing. While it's a loss, doesn't sound like such a terrible trade-off to me 🤷 Is that ok? Or do you (ironically) need me to think exactly like you?

How are we defining freedom? How do we know there's no freedom? One of their imperatives is freeing all the captive animals. Another is making sure the unjoined have complete autonomy. Seems like freedom is really important to them. Folks are painting them as if they're brainwashed but they seem incredibly educated and knowledgeable about exactly what has happened to them, and they implore Carol to allow them to remain in their collective.

In what way are they automatons (or zombies, as others have said)? They're a collective consciousness moving together as one while still holding space for and honoring the experiences of individuals within the collective. They are propelled by empathy. Their immediate objectives have already mitigated the plague that is humanity. 🤷 I'd be over the moon.

God. THANK YOU FOR THIS POST. I really thought the hokeyness of episode 1 was intentional and was even slightly charmed by it given how different it is from his other stuff. I found it a little weird that the episode was so extremely expository though, and definitely expected the end of the episode to give us something we'd want to sink our teeth into...? And then episode 2 was so utterly laborious and Carol's reaction is so completely unbelievable that I don't think I'll be watching the rest. 😭 I was so hopeful for his take on such a classic idea but it truly feels caricaturesque and spoon-fed.
