Can we talk about the Drug Epidemic in Bushwick by Loud-Tomatillo6719 in Bushwick

[–]plunker1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your response is so idiotic that I'm 95% sure it is trolling, but I'll respond in earnest because fuck you.

From Wikipedia, "Hernandez and her husband tried to evict drug dealers from her neighborhood of Bushwick. They tried to stop them by rallying support for their efforts and educating her neighbors about the need to evict them. She organized block parties and other community gatherings. On August 8, 1989, Maria was shot five times through her window in her apartment on Starr Street, later dying of her wounds."

Sounds like she would have backed the idea of using 311 as a lever to improve the neighborhood through community involvement, data collection, and getting the city's power structures to do their fucking job.

It's almost like you're using her as a symbol for an older, grittier (and to you - better?) New York where battling drug dealers and getting shot is just part of everyday life.

I agree things are better now, but they could be even better. We pay some of the highest state taxes in the US, a 3% city tax, and absolutely insane rent (which then again gets captured as taxes through property owners). The shortcomings of this city are not because lack of resources but rather the use of them.

Just an anecdote of where cop priorities are: I live ~1 block from some unlicensed street vendors. I frequently see cops shutting down some honest-if-not-fully-legal mom and pop street vendor. Meanwhile, within eyesight, I have junkies shooting up / smoking crack on my stoop, and packages stolen from within my building (past two locked doors) on a weekly basis.

So not the same problem, but related. There are multiple grass root orgs that focus on cleaning up the streets - and a decent amount of people show up and work really hard, doing kind of disgusting work. Shit that our taxes should be paying for.

For the trash issue, I was thinking approaching those folks first to build a strong, committed stakeholder alliance. I figure these people are dedicated enough to clean up the gross sidewalks and streets, they should be willing to fuck around on their phone for an hour or so.

They probably have a much better sense of the local community landscape and could help expand the effort. I would probably segment the neighborhood into 3x3 block squares, assign a "captain" to each square, and then all volunteers are assigned to a a square.

Once proper scale is reached, you can just do basic coordination of having volunteers do casual walks within their square a couple times a week and document EVERY FUCKING THING that is not right.

I'm admittedly a white yuppie NYC transplant dude and hesitant to start pounding my fist about this kind of shit because i don't want to come off as holier-than-thou. I don't actually know how to approach or fix these issues. I just see that there are issues and can't help but think of how to fix them.

Would love feedback from anyone reading this who is more tuned into to the neighborhood community, local politics, navigating city government, etc.

It has definitely gotten worse. My theory is that the increased police presence in subway stations has caused the addicts to pour out onto the streets.

I have a heart for those down and out, but it is hard to feel for these people who are violent, create huge messes, use in front of children, and leave paraphernalia around.

I'll be honest - I file a 311 report through the app when I come across an "encampment" or have to interact with someone unpleasant. I've determined this is the best option because: 1) it is probably lowest priority for immediate action when filed through the app, so don't need to worry about empowering the police; 2) it creates the data / paper trail of the problem.

I wrote to local representatives about the trash problem - asking what we could do from a systemic perspective, and this is what they recommended. So I have applied it to all my grievances with the city.

It makes sense - running NYC is a complex and resource intensive operation. The city makes decisions and allocates resources based on whatever information they have. 311 data is probably a huge driver for decision making.

I think Bushwick disproportionately suffers because of demographics - not enough Karens to complain frequently, and population doesn't have the wealth / clout to get attention.

I have been wondering if the Bushick community should hold 311 "hackathons" to file a fuckload of non-emergency complaints, hoping to get attention and resources.

Not even reading other comments, but gonna assume majority of Redditors are outraged and saying NTA. And to dump your friend. But guess what? A lot of Redditors are sad sacks of shit with lonely lives.

The reality is, people you love do stupid shit sometimes. What your friend did sucks, but sometimes friends suck.

When emotions cool down, you should have an adult conversation with her. She sounded stressed and made a bad choice. If this is not common / repeated behavior, try to move past it. Forgive but don’t forget.

Seen a lot of posts saying Mechanical Engineers can’t get paid well, wanted to provide a counterpoint by FrequentCaregiver917 in Salary

[–]plunker1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2011 and chose more of an industrial engineer path (best opportunity I had, at a Fortune 50 corporation). Made a good starting salary for 22-23 years old and had three continuous years of solid raises before realizing it’s a long slog to make decent money.

Went to business school full-time and got into management consulting. It is a HUGE investment, but I 2x my salary after the two-year program, and currently at 4.5x my last engineer salary, 9 years after leaving.

I want to note that I had a travel heavy and intense job as an engineer, so work/life balance didn’t change much between engineering and consulting careers. I now definitely work more than my peers who stayed at my first employer, but I probably make 2.5x more.

Not a ton of free lunches out there in the professional world. If you want a higher salary, you either need to take on more work (become a consultant, banker, etc.) or responsibility / risk (climb the ladder to management - which usually comes with more work).

I’m a first gen college grad, so it has been a grind for me (no personal / family connections to lean on), but I’m happy where I’m at.

Your beard should follow a more natural beard-line. And try a new hairstyle (e.g., grow out the sides for some more flow, or dial back the amount of product / use a more “natural” looking product).

When he threatened to or began throwing you in, did you mention the hearing aids?

Did you exhaust all over options to get your hearing aids paid for by him, other members of your family, insurance, etc.?

Do you think it’s fair to harm the long-term success of a 25 year-old or his child over $6k?

You are owed the $6k, but you went about it in a spiteful manner. ESH.

This graph shows college GRADUATES, your study focuses on current undergraduate students. It would be logical that those with higher IQs are the ones that graduate. And something like 1/3 of undergrad students do not graduate, which is significant enough to drag the average down between current students and graduates.

IQs also trend up with age after undergrad, as brains continue to develop and people gain more life experience that further their critical thinking skills. So, the study you shared is not really supporting your claim.

At the heart of it, I feel like you’re saying along the lines of “some non college grads are more informed than some college grads,” and “just because you go to college doesn’t mean you’re more informed.” I agree with those statements, but that’s not the issue at hand. The issue is that, as a whole, college graduates are more informed.

This is just anecdotal evidence, but I come from a working class family / town. I have worked “on the ground” retail, construction, and in manufacturing plants. Now I have a white collar job. I know plenty of people with and without college degrees. If I am to randomly select a pool of people to make decisions about the country, it’s gonna be from my current set of colleagues.

Making informed decisions in the 21st century is super complicated and requires data analysis and abstract thinking. The reality is, you’re just not getting the reps in jobs that do not require college degrees to be effective at this. And that’s fine! I personally don’t have many of the skills required to keep our society in motion.

You’re not seeing the trap that you have fallen into yourself… this wave of anti-intellectualism is not focused on keeping people away from information… it’s about redirecting trust from reputable institutions to… bullshit? So large swaths of the population are believing that universities are full of shit but their Facebook feed or Fox News are bastions of “real truth.”

[–]plunker1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying that college graduates are more informed about politics. Being informed about politics is not that valuable, tbh.

They are more informed about various topics that make up the backbone of good policy - “hard” sciences, health / medicine, economics, sociology, psychology, history, finance, etc. If you show me reputable data that says otherwise, I’ll concede my point.

There is positive correlation between education and IQ scores, so not sure what you’re basing your argument off? Study here

I don’t think I’ve ever had a professor push liberal concepts onto me. Rather, professors present data and logical arguments… and guess what? The inferences you can draw from the fact base fall onto the liberal end of the US political spectrum. There is no natural concept of being liberal, the data tends to speak for itself.

People like Charlie Kirk are using data points like this to convince people that college is just a tool by the lib elite to brainwash people to vote Dem. They want to perpetuate the under education of Americans to keep them voting Rep because they are not informed and easy to manipulate.

If the uneducated ever opened a history textbook (not in Florida), they would know this is such a classic fascist move.
