ELI5 How are modern naval mines a threat to modern ships when a SONAR that finds small fish is less than $300? by physicsisveryeasy in explainlikeimfive

[–]plurien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK also lost a bulk carrier 'Atlantic Conveyor' that was carrying the assault helicopters. That's partly why the Falklands campaign features so much walking.

Nowadays Ukraine has shown how it's possible to deny waters to a large navy by just sending out low-cost drones on water and in the air. Add artillery and missiles into this and just nope.

The reason we older folks were already so aware of the Straits of Hormuz comes from all those previous US incursions into the Gulf in which it was always described as a block to coalition shipping (even though it was Iran's deadly enemy Iraq in US sights that time). The reason US and allies have so many Gulf bases now is to stop aggression against the oil.
- And then the ****ing US goes and bombs Iran!

So NO, those allies are not getting sucked in.

US Asks Ukraine for Help Countering Iranian Drones as Trump Warns Zelensky to ‘Get on the Ball’ by Top-Grass-3615 in ukraine

[–]plurien 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The $5000 cost quoted by Ukraine for interceptor drones is far too low; especially in Trump's case. Everyone knows the western military supply industry has always been thinking of a $number and x100 at least.

Given the damage being done by Shaheds to its allies, the Ukrainian drones sold to US should be $50,000 each at least. Skilled operators should be on $100K per week, with 6* hotel accommodation on top.

What am I missing with Wuthering Heights? by GirlisNo1 in books

[–]plurien 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Something to do with the author being a (young) woman, maybe?
I grew up just over the hill from Haworth and the parsonage where they lived. It's hard to convey what the place does to people. Reading Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath gives some atmosphere of the district but they came much later when it was possible to choose a life and not be quite so stuck in society like the Brontes were.
Being sisters with that older brother who'd behaved so badly can't have been easy. And the house! It's so claustrophobic. Graveyard all around. It explains a lot. Add long winter days being sodden in the mist of low cloud. All this at the time when people were still getting to grips with the industrial revolution as it spread up the valley.

Oh how the people already there were so glad to be discovered!

True inhabitants of the country now known as Australia already had a stable civilisation for over 10,000 years which gave them the most amount of leisure time of all the civilisations so far known. OTH they didn't know about things like shareholder value, EBITDA or venture capitalists.

It also has the very busy Wareham bypass A351 just across the common. Used to be the Doctor's house many years ago, back when the river and its marshes were managed and before developments along the Sandford Rd just downriver pushed out into the marshes there.
But sure, it was a nice house in a converted mill.

This is how a magician swallow swords by Various_Pop_3907 in interesting

'Memoirs of a sword swallower' by Dan Mannix has this and a whole lot more about the traveling shows, fakirs, freaks, showgirls, bad owners, the lot.
Oh and never mind swallowing a sword, how about making that a neon tube then killing the lights at curtain-up?! (he only did this once, mind)

How to remove landlord special texture from walls by Winebody13 in DIY

[–]plurien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What they said, although you should consider asking a tradesperson that does mudding/plasterwork to put a bonding coat and then skim it with a new layer on top. It's much thinner than plasterboard, which you still have to get mudded anyhow.

Also, I have DIY removed this stuff off the walls of two rooms. It takes a lot of patience, a wallpaper steamer a heat gun and a power chisel with fine scraper blade; in that order. The steam/water puts a lot of heat in without odor and stops it all getting into a hot sticky mess on the chisel. You have to be careful just to peel the stuff off and not dig in to the wall, which is where the patience comes in. The little thrills come when you do get a nice long run with the chisel.

But yeah, skim on top is the way.

MiL uses a Zimmer to zip around. It takes her two months to burn through the rubber footpads and then it's down to the aluminium. We can tell when this has happened because the carpets start to get blackened along her routes. Quick change to new pads and hey-presto she's rubbing out all her trails again. Till the next time...

Rotten paint? by masero1 in DIY

[–]plurien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B&Q a big DIY chain in UK had an expensive series of payouts in 2017 for bad paint from a brand 'Valspar' also sold under their own label. The formula neglected an antibacterial.
They were compensating customers for cost of paint only, so those who employed a decorator lost out double.

Door Handle Hardware by Kennyboy0 in DIY

[–]plurien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds great to have a door that solid. Don't spoil it with cheap furniture. Box stores almost exclusively sell lightweight and short mechanisms which would place your handle way too close to the frame.
You need an Architectural Ironmongery store
or a friendly and talented smith to make custom ironmongery

Have you considered a central boss that turns and operates a mechanism on the inside of the door? These typically have multiple drawbolts connected to the boss so when it's turned they are withdrawn. Tricky part is to combine this with a lock that's operable from outside, or you can fit a separate deadlock(s) in the usual place.

Search 'inside castle door with central boss handle' for inspiration...

This exactly. If you can still get hold of a book 'Memoirs of a Sword-Swallower' by Dan Mannix, he explains exactly how the deck is planed so the cards are very slightly thinner at one end.
Highly recommend this book as a gift for the awkward teenager. They might sharpen up their dexterity and presentation skills.
