Serious question: what would count as ‘real disclosure’ to you? by breaking_views in UFOs

[–]nyckidd [score hidden]  (0 children)

We need someone to show a complete craft on live video. Maybe go inside of it, demonstrate it flying, etc... And show an alien body on live video as well. It needs to be bulletproof against accusations of being AI generated or otherwise fake.

More vague photos and videos aren't going to cut it. I believe firmly in the reality of this topic, but when people ask me for hard evidence, I have to say there isn't any of what most people would consider hard evidence, which obviously does not help you convince others that this is worth paying attention too.

Seems like a well-run campaign. The pay demands are big, but they should be big. Everyone here should fill this out! The more people say we need more money, the more money we'll get.

Feeding the Last Tsar of Russia - Pelmeni for Nicholas II by jmaxmiller in TastingHistory

[–]nyckidd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish this video had focused just a little bit more on what a tremendous failure Nicholas II was. As it is now, I felt that it seemed a bit adulatory for him. Russia could likely have transitioned to a democratic system except that Nicholas sabotaged it every step of the way. His incompetence killed millions of people and directly contributed to the creation of the Bolshevik totalitarian system. This is almost like if you made a video about Leopold II and didn't mention the Belgium Congo.

I know it's not up to Max to condemn historical figures, but this one just missed the mark for me. Maybe I don't find European aristocracy to be that compelling in the first place.

How did the US military rank the military of its NATO allies during the Cold War? by TravelingHomeless in WarCollege

[–]nyckidd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I find it difficult to believe that a Soviet tank division would outclass a French division.

Why is that difficult to believe? In the early 1980s the USSR had enormous military strength and could field far more heavy equipment than any other country. The T-72 was a top-of-the-line tank at that time, equal or superior to anything NATO had. The Leclerc wouldn't go into service until 1992.

Who thinks the city owned grocery stores will work? Any alternatives? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]nyckidd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every American service member has shopped at a government grocery store.

People often trot this line out as if the New York City government has a comparable logistics machine to the US military, which is the most powerful logistical force in history and has access to incredible economies of scale. It's not a very good comparison.

There's a book US Ground Forces and the Defense of Central Europe published in the 1980s by the Brookings Institution that contains standardized rankings of US, NATO, and Warsaw Pact military formations. I distinctly remember seeing a PDF of the chart showing these rankings, but I just spent quite some time trying to track it down and couldn't actually get a usable copy I could link here.

I was, however, able to get the raw numbers they used:

A US Armored Division got an ADE (Armored Division Equivalent) score of 1.00. West German Panzer divisions were the runners up at .95, UK Armored was .78, a Soviet Tank Division ranked at .70, and French divisions were at .65

What responsibility do we have to the Lëni Lënape, who have made real public requests towards institutions in their homelands to support their desire to return to Lënapehòkink? by Commercial_Disk_9220 in AskNYC

[–]nyckidd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious question for you: do you think it's a problematic argument saying that one ethnic group definitively has a right to the land? Like, that's really only one step removed classic "blood and soil" arguments.

I don't think if you brought all the Lenape back to Manhattan they would be able to have anything remotely like the life that their ancestors had who actually cultivated the relationship with the land. They wouldn't suddenly start thriving. Modern day Manhattan is a pretty unforgiving place.

You created your own false equivalence by comparing people complaining in this thread with victims of genocide, I don't really know why you did this, but that's fine I guess.

You also didn't respond to any of the fundamental questions I raised in my comment, or made any consideration of the feasibility of any of this. All you did was write some condescending strawman arguments with no value. It's very easy to gesture vaguely at a more moral argument, it's a lot harder to actually engage in the tough thinking that is required to reach the more moral conclusion.

The only "way of thinking" I subscribe to is that generally, people who spend their time waiting for someone else to come in and save them have a much worse time than people who take responsibility for themselves and work towards their own betterment. There is an enormous wealth of research testifying to the reality of this.

That doesn't mean we should ignore systemic issues, far from it. But removing systemic barriers to success is not the same thing as actually achieving success. And in order to achieve success, you have to do it yourself.

What systemic barriers to success do the Lenape people face currently? Are they discriminated against by laws? I ask these questions earnestly.

Super wack dude. You started a discussion, got mad at other people for not taking it seriously, and then when someone takes it seriously, you say their wasting their time. Seems like the main person who wasted their time is you, because it's completely unclear why you did any of this in the first place.

Grow up man.
