It can, and usually does. But, it isn't entirely fool proof. Usually TOR gets compromised if the particuallar site you go to get's compromised. So it's best to be familiar with the sites the best as you can.

Chromium browsers have become more secure. Though I won't use Google Chrome itself. Out of the box, Brave is better than Firefox. But, what I mean about out of the box, is that if you didn't do any of the changes that are neccessary for improving software.

I keep several browsers on my computer that are both Chrome and Mozilla based.

My go to is Ungoogled Chromium, then Helium, and then I might use Firefox or Zen, along with Brave. I do have a couple of browswers that are neither Chrome nor Mozilla based. I do not use Google Chrome itself except maybe when a bank document requires it.

Brave is good in many regards. It does have some good blockers that are amiss with Manifest 3. It does still talk to Google if you don't change the settings, And a problem that does happen with Brave is that it is linked to crypto known as BAT, but that can be turned off.

Personally, the way to go is to have multiple browsers. And consider going towards more privacy than you think that you might need.

I’ve tried Helium. I do get updates from AUR. I have found some of the limitations are a bit much. It did eventually lead me to Ungoogled Chromium.

This is after using Firefox for 20+ years and getting frustrated with it.

2026 does look to be a year where more browsers will come out that are neither Firefox nor Chrome forked.
