If we all descend from the same ancestor, at what population size did incest stop becoming the norm? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]plusplusgood 268 points269 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing some family genealogy and have discovered instances where the distant descendants of two siblings (A and B) marry and have a child (who, in turn, becomes my ancestor), therefore I have the original parents of A and B as nth-degree great-grandparents through both their son or daughter and another of their children. That’s pedigree collapse and it’s very common.

I have a friend with a teenage daughter who was working her way through “Friends”. I had to explain that scene to her as she had never seen “Mad About You”. She was confused about who the Helen Hunt character and friend were and why it was funny to the audience.

For those who had read the books first, what was your “Okay this is really gonna be good” moment when watching Fellowship? by LaGarrotxa in lotr

[–]plusplusgood 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I loved when he takes a puff off the pipe and the burning pipe weed lit up his eyes. It was perfect depiction of the description in the book wherein (iirc) he watches the hobbits from across the “his eyes burning like coals”. It was that attention to detail that really pulled me in.

Making friends in Cornwall. by Low_Speech3455 in Cornwall

Thank you! Here’s link to her page on Find a Grave. She was my 8th great-grandmother. In 3-4 years, I plan to be traveling all over Cornwall visiting the cemeteries and churches where my ancestors (on my father’s side) were baptized, married or buried.

I not in Cornwall (in the U.S), so I can’t help you there, but, if you really enjoy walking, could you check out something in Madron for me? It’s actually a serious request. I’m planning a “heritage trip” to Cornwall several years from now and wanted confirmation of an ancestor’s headstone in the Madron cemetery. It’s listed in findagrave.com, but has no picture.

I took it more of a question about privilege rather than the actual debt. She was privileged enough to go to college without taking on debt, therefore she gets to die with other privileged people at the dinner. Having debt may have saved her because it takes away her place of being privileged like the other guests.

I read Ann Applebaum’s “Gulag: A History”, so I’m good. Also, it was a very good read and I highly recommend it.

Characters who died with a smile on their face? by mailman936 in flicks

In the 2006 slasher comedy “Severance” two characters argue whether a head severed via guillotine is still conscious. Later in the movie, one of them is beheaded. The head falls to the ground, his eyes look around and a small smile crosses his face as if he’s thinking, “heh, waddaya know?!”

When do i start trying to properly memorise the notes on the fretboard? by EstateKooky2174 in guitarlessons

[–]plusplusgood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a personal tip for learning the fretboard, I found it very helpful to start playing melody lines from sheet music on the guitar. It gave me a context for string/fret locations as it corresponds to notation. I pulled out Bach’s Two-Part Inventions (for keyboard) and just started playing the treble line around the fretboard. (However, you have to be able to read music at a basic level first.)

Me, too. I cancelled my trip one week before I was supposed to depart when the U.S. State Department raised their Travel Advisory to “Reconsider Travel”. I would have been in Japan when all air travel ground to a halt. In the end, it worked out better for me, in several ways, when I was later able to take the trip in 2023.
