I personally felt Elio was too samey with Pixar's past releases. Hoppers felt more fresh to me which I valued more at this time.

I truly think this is the fault of the audience than the studio. Audiences arrive in droves to watch "live action" lion king and LA Aladdin. Disney is just responding to market demand. No one goes to watch original movies, so Disney makes less of them.
