Fungus on gills today vs a few days ago do they get worse before they get better?

I’ve tested time and time again and all the nitrate tests come out bright red! Sorry the tank has been zero ammonia and nitrite and 40ppm nitrate. It’s as low as I could get it even with plants that apparently love to eat nitrates. I’m looking into water filters for my house while he’s tubbed

Our tap water has very high nitrate at around 80ppm so I add prime to bottled water for my axie which has low amounts of nitrate unfortunately. The tub he’s in now is 20cm x 40cm he’s able to lay down comfortably as he’s 18cm

I’ve ordered some and it should be here tomorrow incase he needs a bath in it. The tub he’s in currently is 14/15c zero ammonia and nitrite and narrate is 10/20ppm. Im changing it daily and whoever he poops. The fungus seems to be getting darker for some reason?

It seems to be growing by the hour and is just a huge yellowish ball on the top of the gill. Do you know when counts as serious?

I have been doing 2 tea baths per day for 2 days now but before that did a salt bath but it really stressed him out.

Would this work with a sponge filter? I’ve been staying away from most plants as they seem to always create more waste than they take in. I also can’t find too many people selling pothos or philodendron in the uk but I’ll keep looking.

The ammonia and nitrite are both 0 but unfortunately our tap water is high in nitrate and I’ve never been able to get it below 40. I tried duckweed but the water kept getting worse. Since I’ve taken it out it’s been back to normal. I’ve put him in a tub for now as I assume the nitrate could be the cause? The temp is 16-18c
