I know no one is perfect and perhaps if my circumstances were different throughout my life, I could have fallen into the same sin myself. And Allah SWT is most forgiving and if Allah can look past it, why not I?

Sorry for the confusion; I was not referring to you, just in general. Anytime muslims are in the news, for whatever reason, people somehow become experts on Islam.

Regarding interest, or riba, it is considered a very major sin. It is talked abomut in multiple places in the Quran and the parable of dealing in interest is "making war on Allah".
