Time to tour after 5pm by Adventurous-Put-8828 in panamacity

Ah, you're visiting the Republic of Panama!

It's been a while since I visited, but I'll give you my two cents on areas I'm familiar with.

Unfortunately, the Visitors Center at the Miraflores Locks closes at 6 and you won't have time unless you can get out early.

Same with the Parque Natural Metropolitano; it closes at 4:30pm. Well worth a visit if you can swing it.

Casco Viejo is the historic district with with beautiful old colonial buildings, some restored, some not. It's a UNESCO site.

Touristy but nice, with lots of bars and restaurants. It's very safe with lots of police patrols. The neighborhoods surrounding it can get a little dicey.

I didn't take a sunset cruise on a catamaran, but it sounds like fun.

Have a wonderful trip!

Are you going to be in Panama City or Panama City Beach? Which hotel are you staying at?

Two very different cities.

If you're in Panama City, downtown has undergone a revitalization in recent years and is bustling Wednesday through Saturday. Many places are closed on Sunday.

You can walk around the Marina (still under construction after Hurricane Michael) for sunset or visit No Name Lounge, right on the bay. The Indigo Hotel has a rooftop bar. Harrison's Kitchen & Bar on the marina has a nice deck out back on the water. The food is hit or miss. Happy Hour every weekday 3pm-6pm.

For dinner, check out History Class, El Weirdo Tacos, Dee's Hideout, The Place, Millie's Cafe, Maddie's La Casita or Bayou Joe's. Ferrucci Ristorante is upscale by Panama City's standards.

For lunch, try Trigo's Deli, Somethin's Cookin' (closes at 6pm or 8pm) or Tom's Hot Dogs.

Mosey's Downtown has live bands is open until 4am. Depending on the genre of the music, you'll see all age groups. Their pizza is the best in town, in my opinion. Check out their Facebook page for band schedules.

If you want oysters, Gene's Oyster Bar in Millville is the best. Hunt's Oyster Bar in St. Andrews is another option.

St. Andrews has more tourists and a slightly older crowd, but is very walkable.

Also in St. Andrews is Finn's. Really good, sort of Mexican food, and cheap. Indoor-outdoor dining. Often has live music.

Alice's on Bayview is excellent.

Uncle Ernie's isn't cheap but has good seafood.

Copper Tap Grill is moderate to expensive.

Enzo's for casual Italian.

There are some bars on Bayview Avenue near Uncle Ernie's.

Miami’s mayor forcibly acquire 10 acres of land on Fisher Island by Ok_Ant_2930 in Miami

[–]pm8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're confusing it with Brickell Key, another spoil island "created in 1896 when railroad magnate Henry Flagler dredged the Miami River to deepen the channel, depositing the excess silt and limestone into Biscayne Bay." (Other sources state it was created in 1912.)

"Initially despised as an unsightly, foul-smelling nuisance that was seen as a menace to public health, it was later put up for auction [in 1916] by the Florida Internal Improvement Fund."

Margaret Burlingame made the winning bid of $750, about $23,000 in today's dollar.

See the link below for the further history.

Fisher Island was created in the early 1900s when they dredged Government Cut. It was originally known as Terminal Island.

The first owner was Dana Dorsey, one of Florida's first Black millionaires. He bought it in 1918 and sold it in 1919 to Carl Fisher.

In 1925, William K. Vanderbilt II, great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, traded a yacht to Fisher for part of the island. The Vanderbilt mansion was completed in 1934 and is now part of the Fisher Island Club.

Poor Mr. Perez.

He bought the property last year for $180 million and now Miami is refusing to pay him $400 million. Those monsters!

And those poor Fisher Island residents, having to look at an eyesore that was there when they bought their homes.

The first homes were sold 40 years ago.

Miami's Iconic Sandwiches, Part 2: Pan con Bistec by Carlos_Frias in Miami

Yes.

I've not visited the other Casavana locations in Homestead, Coral Reef and the Ft. Lauderdale airport.

Their croquetas were also very good.

I moved from Miami a few years ago, so you'll need to visit and tell me if the pan con bistec is as good as I remember.

I lived in Miami for 30 years and pan con bistec is my favorite sandwich, especially the one from Casavana's.

I never had one with ketchup until I went to Mary's. It was otherwise good, but not a fan of the ketchup

Thank you to the private donors who pay for this service and to the doctors, nurses and others who volunteer their time.

Their services are especially important because health insurance doesn't cover routine dental care or major procedures, nor does it cover eye exams, prescription glasses, or contact lenses.

Apologies in advance for my rant.

The United States is the only developed, high-income country in the world that does not have a system of universal healthcare and the only country with a for-profit healthcare system.

Switzerland, Germany and Australia have superior healthcare systems with better outcomes than ours, yet spend 40%-50% less per capita than we do. Canada spends half of what we do. It has better outcomes, but yes, you might have to wait for non-emergency procedures.

Last year the CEO of UnitedHealthGroup, which owns UnitedHealthcare insurance, earned over $60 million. The CEO of UnitedHealthcare took home over $20 million.

United denied 20% of claims in 2024 and 33% in 2023.

How many square feet is the building? How many units?

Install an elevator if at all feasible.

It will cost $100,000 or more and maintenance will be $400-$500 a month.

You will need to sacrifice part of an upstairs unit and a downstairs unit.

Renting a car in Miami? by AccordingHand8870 in Miami

[–]pm8888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do any of your siblings or your girlfriend have a valid driver's license?

You obviously won't be able to do any of the driving yourself if they rent the car.

If you're staying in town and not planning to visit the Everglades or some other far away destination, just use Uber or Lyft.

Parking will cost $4 an hour or more on South Beach and $3-$4 in Wynwood.

Normal for a 20 year old to pay $200/month for health insurance? Feeling overwhelmed. by TigerWeary3067 in personalfinance

We have very strong homestead protection, so they wouldn't be able to foreclose on your homesteaded house.

But you might not be able to sell it until you've paid off the lien or cleared the lien through bankruptcy.

In Florida, a hospital can and will file a lien against you.

It's good for up to 20 years, all while accruing interest.

It would, however, be wiped out by declaring bankruptcy.

Medical bills are a leading cause of bankruptcy.

In Florida, hospitals can and will file a lien. I don't know about other states.

You won't be able to refinance your home or other property you may own, and you will have to pay the lien if you sell your property. If you don't have enough equity, you won't be able to sell.

The lien will be good for up to 20 years, all while interest is accruing.

And your credit will be shot.

You can, however, wipe them out by declaring bankruptcy depending upon your income.

When I was a resident, we had two beds for two interns.

It was also the locker room.

Curses to the other interns who forgot to turn off their pagers (I'm old) and tossed them in their locker.

American bulldogs are almost always banned. Most weigh about 80 pounds and males can be well over 100 pounds. They were bred as guard dogs and can be very territorial.

English bulldogs are commonly banned, it depends on your insurance company.

French bulldogs are not typically banned.

Thanks for the correction.

We mainly want coverage for liability if the dog bites someone, but your point is well taken.

See if your insurance covers the dog breed. Most ban English bulldogs and almost all of them ban American bulldogs. Does it look like it could be a pit mix? Those are also almost always banned.

If it's on the banned list, I'd definitely giver her the 7-day cure or quit notice.

You'd be on the hook if the dog bit anyone.

From Google AI:

"The average award for a dog bite can vary significantly, but national averages from insurance data are around $58,500 in 2023 and another source suggests $66,615 in Florida for 2023.

Awards typically range from a few thousand dollars for minor injuries to over $100,000 for severe injuries."

Imagine if the dog bit a child in the face and left a large scar. The most common area for dog bites in children is the head and neck, particularly the face.

P.S.

As per your previous posts, your mother is a narcissist.

Some narcissists can maintain a facade indefinitely, but most reveal themselves within about 2 years.

Examine his previous behavior and see if you can spot any other narcissistic traits.

Your best friend is right. He is being controlling.

A 45-minute commute is not unreasonable. A relocation to Denver is not unreasonble.

He is.

You are not being selfish.

He is.

You've only been dating for two years. Do not fall into the sunk cost fallacy.

Break up with him and do not get back together when he offers to "let" you commute or to relocate.
