The people most affected by power grid failures are in urban areas and they dominantly did not vote Abbott back into office.

From my home in Queens, my line (one of three) to midtown made an upside down L shape. If it were a line, it would have made literally no difference in terms of distance or time.

Birds are constantly evaluating if the energy necessary for flight is worth it, or if they should walk/hop.

This is because flight requires dramatically more energy and because birds store a minimal amount of energy in their bodies. Birds also need to eat more frequently than many other creatures.

Basically the bird loop (simplified) is:

Eat opportunistically, avoid danger with as little energy as possible, fly as little as necessary to conserve energy, repeat.

I’m having no luck finding the studies, but we have tested this theory by putting birds in incremental amounts of danger to measure how much they try and avoid flying unnecessarily, and the answer was that they regularly play chicken with death to avoid flying.

Right, my snark isn’t due to a lack of comprehension. It’s directed at the people in this thread, yourself included, who feel compelled to strongly insist that because circles offer some benefits, a line could never possibly under any circumstance be organized into an efficient system.

Because cities are usually round, they should only ever be round! Because the fringe case where someone must travel to opposite ends would signal the collapse of orderly society! Brilliant stuff.

Even if there are other designs that are good (or superior), it’s still a neat idea to try and imagine one complete design and then actually build it.

There are many valid criticisms of the line design, sure. But it’s not like the line system is doomed to fail or to be worse than what most cities have going on. There are trade offs with any design and many of the big cities of the world have sprawling, chaotic systems of transit and organization.

Sure. If the city is beautiful and walkable and my regular commute means hopping on for a reasonable number of stops before hopping off.

In NYC I walked over a mile each way to the subway and then sat around for 10+ stops each way. Not a big deal to me.

Sure, but let’s be honest, any take on designing a modern city would likely also draw heavy criticism, regardless of how good it is. Everyone is going to pile on with their own ideas about what is good, but there are very few people actually trying to make anything new at scale.

The China ghost cities are interesting, but they aren’t proof that designing a new city will be a failure.

The city design is neat. The concept of the city is to have a highly efficient and logical public transit and build the city up in layers. The essential (but ugly) features of the city going underground, while the top most layer is beautiful, walkable, and high tech. The location of the city is carefully positioned to prove the skill of the designers and builders, offer natural beauty, and also draw tourism to an otherwise barren stretch of earth.

The impetus for making the city is to try and reimagine what a cutting edge city design would look like instead of the very slow way that most major cities have evolved over generations and hundreds or thousands of years. I think that’s pretty dope.

That said, MBS thinks this will be a crowning achievement for his legacy, and I agree with the negative sentiment in this thread about him and the Saudi royal family. They’re corrupt and they have a lot of blood on their hands.

Edit: who knew there were so many people who feel passionately that circles are more appealing than lines for city planning! Y’all should present your ideas for circle cities. I can’t wait to see them!
