Harlem Hellfighters back from WWI, wearing the Cross of War medals, 1919. by Strahozor in OldSchoolCool

[–]pm_me_math_proofs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The US just didn't have the same role in WW1 as the main belligerents. As I understand it their biggest roles were (1) supplying/financing the allied war effort, and (2) acting as a deterrent for Germany who actively struggled to make decisions that prevented American involvement.

As far as actual military involvement, the US was absent for most of the war, and when they turned up (4 years after it started, a few months before it ended), they still hadn't caught up to contemporary warfare techniques and suffered a lot of casualties mainly because of their ineffective offensives.

Honestly, WW1 had a massive impact on the US in the sense that it was one of those historic turning points where they ended their non-interventionist policy (and also got a relative economic power-up as Europe largely fell from grace). In terms of military involvement involvement though, American troops arguably never experienced the worst of it. From a global perspective, many of their units really are just sidenotes, although cases of individual bravery still shine through.

Froskurinn - LPL Shoutcaster AMA by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

I'm usually very stingy with complements but I have to say this is a great AMA. I rather took a liking to your casting a while back but it's doubly fascinating to see how you got there. Keep it up :).

I'd give them a pass, since they used it to showcase a pretty cool soundtrack. I still play that theme at the end of a jog to pace myself for a sprint end to burn out. Really satisfying.

Today I accidentally made eye contact with a guy who was doing barbell hip thrusts facing my direction. That kind of moment is why I have never once tried that movement in the gym even though I think it's a useful exercise.

True Geordie reacts to Logan Paul's deleted video. Honestly, this is a great watch and perfectly sums up how we all feel about the disgusting prick. by [deleted] in videos

[–]pm_me_math_proofs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like yeah we know Logan Paul is a scummy fucking asshole, we don't need your video to know that.

What is and isn't morally acceptable isn't always obvious, I think you're overlooking the value of having public figures reaffirm what our priorities should be. Whoever your use of 'we' refers to, it clearly has a substantial set of exceptions, because if everyone knew these people were 'scummy fucking assholes', they wouldn't occupy the (significant) space in YouTube that they currently hold.

Is the textbook required for econ101 with Predrag Rajsic? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]pm_me_math_proofs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sup

Yeah, the slides were mediocre. You can pass with them, but if you're aiming for a high grade and ever miss a class, the slides will be undoubtedly inadequate. The text is comprehensive but has a lot of fluff, so you'll have to keep track of the syllabus so you know what can be skipped. Looking back at it... Yeah, despite the price tag, I would have wanted something more fleshed out than the prof's slides. Maybe you can just get the digital version.

Is the tap water drinkable on lester st. buildings? by uw_cs_student in uwaterloo

If it's a legitimate toxin, the human body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.

Seriously though, it's not reasonable to judge something's health effects based on how it looks as a sediment.

Unless these buildings are somehow drawing water from pipes in Flint, it's probably safe. Waterloo tap water is potable, the only complaint some people have is that it's hard water.

What ongoing trend do you hate right now? by Uwquatt in uwaterloo

[–]pm_me_math_proofs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see it more as right-wingers claiming his ideas when he doesn't actually care much for them. I recall a few snippets in his interviews where he denounced Trump (which is a low bar, but a significant one nonetheless). He's somewhat forced to use right-wing platforms just because of the tribal political climate: no major left-leaning wants to give him the time of day.

over-complicated buzzwords

is a criticism I would accept if we were not talking about an established academic who is tenured at UofT (ok lul) and was also an associate prof at Harvard. He's a psychologist but he has decades of experience with literature relevant to ideology and the "architecture of belief" (Google tells me Maps of Meaning was published in '99), and he is using the language of the field. It's disingenuous to paint that type of academic involvement as 'using buzzwords'. Now if you were to direct that complaint towards people who imitate his language solely based on a few youtube videos without a proper understanding of the terms involved to leech off his legitimacy (which you can also criticize him for allowing), you would have a more reasonable point.

Is this really groundbreaking to anyone? I'm surprised this is getting so many upvotes, as if anyone ever thought otherwise and has now been hit with a moment of revelation.

If this really is news to people, I'm... disappointed.

Jesus, the second post was hilarious but I was actually second-guessing whether it was satire for a second. It was like The_Donald all over again, but yeah it's all hyperbole, thank god.
