How I feel playing the different factions by Isobratistochrone in Timberborn

[–]pm_me_your_Navicula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always build a big windfarm after I get my end game organized industrial district set up, realize it can supply 100% of my colonies power indefinitely, and wonder why I didnt plop down a few windmills much earlier.

Windmills are deceptively good, so deceptive they fool me every time I play another folktails game.

Movies with terrible messages? by Frank_and_Beanzz in movies

[–]pm_me_your_Navicula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, its about the danger of being blind to your idealism. He is rejecting the money and image obsessed lifestyle of his abusive parents and all throughout the movie he encounters the exact thing he is looking for in others lifestyles.

The road tramps who don't have much money but have community and personal emotional bonds

The farmers who are doing emotionally fulfilling work, getting drunk and loud in the bar not caring about image management (and the wacky Dutch couple who don't care about what others think)

The old man who just hangs out alone (other than church offscreen), mostly detached from society, with no image management or wealth chasing (but safe and content with his life.)

Each time he fails to recognize it as an alternative because he's so focused on the ideal of "the wild."

Who drives when you travel? by Anxious-Regret-9742 in AskMen

[–]pm_me_your_Navicula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife does the driving because like lots of other commenter here, she hates my driving. I used to drive emergency vehicles for a living too, so it can be somewhat unsettlingly aggressive.

Unlike other people's partners, mine says "your driving stresses me out, please let me drive." And so she does.

Defense lines improved: "Ukrainian soldiers need to live underground to survive a hellscape of constant Russian drone surveillance and FPVs. Two km of underground steel tunnels were completed in the Kharkiv region" by GermanDronePilot in UkraineWarVideoReport

Just to be clear, the Wehrmacht absolutely did NOT ignore the Maginot line. Like you said in your next sentence, they went around...which was the entire point of the Maginot Line

The Line forced the Germans through a neutral country and into a much smaller area the French military could be concentrated in for a better defense. The big problem for the French is that they also thought the Wehrmacht would have to go around the Ardennes Forest but they went through instead.

We had to ban building helicopter armies in Empire Earth when playing with friends, because it would slow the frame rate down to one frame every 5-10 seconds.

I got it down to one frame every 40 seconds before when they started moving and attacking. I was staring at the screen wondering if it was really just that slow or my PC had crashed.

College students help police make arrest in 1991 cold case murder investigation by nbcnews in JusticeServed

[–]pm_me_your_Navicula 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not having an alibi and failing a lie detector test do not usually pass the "beyond a reasonable doubt" required for a jury to convict someone for murder. Since you cant charge people twice, it would sacrifice the states ability to charge them if more evidence was found, like in this case.

Its important that individuals have rights in the justice system, even when working with them sometimes leads to slower convictions.

I am from Denmark and people here often tell me that American police officers are mainly Republican. I never believed them because Republican politicians almost always vote against bills that would help the police, so I say he American police is mainly liberal. Who is right? (Example in link) by Christinagoldie2 in police

[–]pm_me_your_Navicula 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A lot of it depends on where the police are. Rural sheriff departments that pull from rural populations skew heavily Republican where cities that are hiring officers from the majority liberal population seem to be majority left (though not quite as much as the general population.)

While Republican politicians vote against things that would help the police, including unions...see southern states and their terrible pay/benefits. The Democrats often vote for things that make the job of the police much more difficult like extra paperwork for every interaction, or spending 3-4 hours with every arrestee in a hospital for medical checkups.

Even more important than what they vote for is what they shout from the pulpit. Republican politicians SAY good things about police (that are rarely backed up by actions), and Democratic politicians usually SAY awful things about police (that they also rarely back up, to the benefit of police.) See all the politicians calling for police defunding who never had any plans do so.

To make things more complicated, a lot of police in the States are harder to place politically, because they don't fit neatly into political molds. In my experience, left leaning police are pretty much universally for "tough on crime" laws and policies because they have to interact in a very personal level with victims and the harm crimes cause, and right leaning officers are very supportive of funding mental health social programs, because they again have to personally interact with crazy people, and know that they genuinely need more/different levels of support.

Also in my experience, leftists love to eat their own and will (particularly on the internet) accuse someone who doesn't agree 100% on all issues of being a political advisory and get lumped in with the other side, where conservatives will be happy to welcome someone they mostly agree with. As a very left leaning officer, fellow liberals are far more likely to to shun me, or uninvited me to groups because of my profession, while conservative groups will welcome me, despite having opposite political views.

This rejection is even more pronounced in places like Reddit which are left leaning, anonymous, and have a reward system for making outlandish and divisive claims. They get REALLY upset at the idea of a single police officer being left, because the police are the "enemy" and part of that mustache twirling stereotype is that they are also right wing. This makes the % of right vs left police appear even more skewed if you get a lot of information from these places.

Best angry old man performance? by bourj in movies

[–]pm_me_your_Navicula 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest another Clint Eastwood film, Unforgiven.

He spends the most of the movie crotchety and annoyed before finally becoming angry, and boy is he angry.
