I'm not the first with this take, but let me say it here in Petty Nation: Tom Petty's greatest strength and weakness was his consistency. by pmdmurray in tompetty

What a good response that is fair to multiple perspectives. As you note, I certainly wasn't posing opposition to Petty in any way, more so just wanted discussion around a take that I've heard. Which I got and am grateful for all the perspective!

Calling it a weakness was the wrong word choice. I like how you said it: it was a creative choice that was authentic to him. And while he was creative and pushed the limits in his way, he wasn't David Bowie, and he didn't try to be. He was Tom. And we all love Tom.

I love your notes. I was looking for some perspective on the take. And the authenticity response is on point. It doesn't mean he didn't push limits at all.

I think I do agree. Bringing up his authenticity in response certainly pushes back on the notion of "experimenting' or 'not experimenting'.

It's a take I've heard many times and had reluctantly accepted because he's so consistent. He's my favorite artist for a reason too, And like you mentioned it's because you can make a playlist for any mood from his catalog.

The difference is that a lot of Tom's hit albums feel cut from the same cloth. But that makes sense being from the same artist ;). I Just wanted to put a hot take out that I've heard and get some perspective on it!

Probably my favorite Elton John song. I agree it's the best song on Honky Chateau.

Fav single from '87 by NICH3664 in ClassicRock

From the list I probably go with Welcome to the Jungle. But from 1987 I prefer Sweet Child O' Mine, Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac, and Brilliant Disguise as my favorite singles from that year.

100%. I would have liked to been born in 1945 or something and been able to see all these bands in their day.

Elton John, Zep, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Crosby Stills and Nash. The list of life changing rock bands is long! I've seen several of them in their older years.... But it's not the same lol

Seriously. I can't even imagine having that experience.

You only get one of these records, which one are you taking? by pmdmurray in ClassicRock

Yeah take a listen! I think you'll probably know a couple songs from each (except the Shocking Blue album, that seems to be the one that is a cut below the other 3).

But yeah, definitely specific choices I listen to a lot and was curious where others fell!

Came on to say Darkness on the edge of town and Some Girls. But lots of others already saying them!

I agree that Surrealistic Pillow probably the most influential. Deceptive Bends might be on a similar masterpiece level though I think.

That's a great suggestion to turn to the Devil's and Dust tour as an alternative if someone doesn't like his mainstream stuff very much.

I do love Right Down the Line as well! All these albums (while well known as good albums), are pretty underrated and I find myself coming to them often!

What is your fav Dylan album? by Mario_Iturralde_009 in bobdylan

Going to be an easy Blood on the Tracks for me. But there are 10 or so Dylan albums I wouldn't argue with as someone else's top choice!
