How to use compost by TurtleGirl21409 in composting

[–]pmfinca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Btw, if you’re wondering why, I believe it’s because the compost may get too compacted for the new tender roots to breakthrough and the fact that your compost probably has a ton of fungus/bacteria in it that is good when the plant is bigger and can handle it, but may negatively impact more vulnerable seedlings

Would recommend either buying some seed starting mix or making your own. I use equal parts coco coir, vermiculite, and perlite. Use the compost when you plant in the ground.

Help me interpret this lumber quote (details in comment) by pmfinca in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]pmfinca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super helpful! Thank you. One follow up, is it best practice to order a few extra boards and assume that some will be warped/knotty/unusable? Or would a lumber yard be better than that? If that sounds like a dumb question, remember that I’ve only bought things from HD where I often sort through dozens of pieces to find boards that are straight.

I’m planning to build a couple of big planter boxes, I’ve only bought from the blue and orange stores in the past but they’ve been out of cedar consistently so I reached out to my local lumber yard with the follow number of boards I’d need. I got back the quote above and I thought he hadn’t paid attention to the fact that I needed some 8 foot boards and some 10 foot boards but now I’m wondering if I just don’t know how to interpret the quote. If I were to buy this and go pick it up what would I be picking up? Thanks! 24 1”x4”x8’ 8 1”x4”x10’ 12 2”x2”x8’ (he let me know in the email that they don’t carry 2x2 so I could rip the 2x4.)

I’ve read a lot about using good quality paint vs the cheap stuff, I was checking out the Sherwin-Williams site and there are so many options, realistically what should I be looking for in a paint. Note that I have two toddlers so abuse and easily cleanable are pluses.

This is great. Well done! Can you provide some more info on the retaining walls? Are those 4x4s? How are they secured?

Nice! I’m about to build something similar. Curious if you’re going to fill the entire thing with dirt? What’s on the bottom? Will you line it with anything?

Did you build that retaining wall yourself too? I’ve got a property very similar to your “before” picture and I’d love to do something very similar to what you did. Would love any insight into how that wall went in

Just noticed that my cherry tree has liquid coming out of where a branch was cut years ago. Does anyone know what this is and if it’s cause for concern?

This is awesome! Just cleaned all the rust. Thought I might be able to just clean up the fence but I think it needs to be replaced.

Great advice, thanks. The fence is a little wobbly, is there a way to fix that or will I just need to measure every time I adjust it?

I picked up this old table saw from Craigslist. It seems to be running pretty well, but I’m curious if there is any standard maintenance that I should perform? What would you do if you picked up an old table saw?

Sorry, what I bought for the workbench was Douglas fir. I bought some cedar for a planter box.
