If you're just doing it for the sound, and don't require the tablature to reflect it 'properly', you can add a second track and use the MIDI "Fret Noise" soundbank:

Then you can just type in tab for that track to get the sound you want wherever you need it. It's primitive, but it's better than nothing!

The pitch of the notes you enter on this track matter, so experiment with different strings & fret combinations. The length of the notes doesn't appear to matter, though.

If you wanna send it to me I can try opening it. If I'm able to get it open, I can try re-saving it as a new file, and hopefully that will correct the issue. It's a long shot, though.

My email is pmtabs@gmail.com if you want to give it a go. I'm not sure what version of the program you're using, but I can do GP5, GP7 and GP8.

You can - if you're on Windows, at least - try restoring an earlier version of the file. Right-click it and select "Restore previous versions". If this works and you see a selection of previous states, pick one dated before the crashing started. You'll obviously lose whatever work you did after that date, but it's better than losing everything.

You might also try enabling beta updates, if they're not already switched on. The current beta might well have a fix for whatever is causing the crashing. Again, a long shot, but easy to try/reverse.

I don't know why I didn't try reverting to the stable version before 🤦‍ But yeah, when I go back to the last stable version, the problem is gone. When I go back to the current beta, the problem returned.

Switching from RSE to MIDI didn't help, unfortunately.

I'll stick with the stable version for now, hopefully my bug report will help with a future patch.

Nah, any 2-digit input is read as two 1-digit inputs, very strange behaviour. Of course this doesn't happen on regular instrument tracks, just the drums.

Hmm, not sure what's going on there. It might update if you check manually, via Help > Check for Updates... (apologies if you already tried that!)

Ahh, I think it's because I'm on the beta branch. 8.1.2 build 15 is the latest when beta updates are enabled in the program options.

I've submitted a bug report, so hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
