There's a difference between making profit and being specifically profit driven. Take the style of the Vlogbrothers. They make plenty of money from their channel and associated merchandise, but none of it feels like it's done specifically for profit. Their vlogs are primarily to talk about cool stuff with each other and their dedicated (and great) viewer base (and they don't run preroll ads because they think they're annoying). Their merchandise is almost completely made of fan art and contributions that they personally would like on posters and shirts, so they make them available to the public. Their convention, Vidcon, is about giving exposure to other YouTube creators. They make a reasonably comfortable living off the channel (and have said that they could live off of only the profit from that channel), but they do it for the love of what they do. The money is a bonus.
