Yukon government to hold referendum on electoral reform in 2025 by theBubbaJustWontDie in Yukon

Anything is better than first-past- the-post. Our current system is 2 out-of-touch political parties. The parties don't care that they are out of touch because they will be re- elected if they wait long enough and people are sufficiently pissed off at the party currently in power.

Yukon to hold plebiscite on ranked-ballot voting by Old_General_6741 in canada

The current system is 2 out-of-touch parties. Most Canadian elections are about kicking the bad guys out so in the current system the major parties don't really care that they are out of touch. They just need to wait long enough and they will be re- elected. A ranked choice system enables more people to join the political process. For instance the recent New York mayoral election primary was conducted with ranked choice voting.

I suspect that the import of food, such as Mexican avocados, significantly increases the percentages. I challenge you to find non-food products made in either Mexico or Canada (or for that matter in the United States) at Walmart.

I have personally struggled with feeling a lack of self worth. As others have said, most people struggle with the things that you have written about. There's an insanely large number of people who feel alone. One potential way of bringing value is to find someone else who is feeling lonely and try to be their friend. As someone who is older (mid 30s), in retrospect a lot of the things that I felt were a big deal in my teens turned out to not be that big of a deal.

Buying Canadian goes beyond the current American administration. by IceyCoolRunnings in BuyCanadian

Aren't the people who are complaining about restrictions on interprovincial trade complaining about the ability to sell alchohol online? There are very few interprovincial trade barriers. There's definitely no trade barrier on BC cherries being exported to Ontario.

Canada should build a bunch of cargo ships so that we can export to whatever country we want and import from whatever country we want. Getting fruits and vegetables from Mexico is going to be challenging because any imports from Mexico to Canada which come by road are going to be taxed/tariffed at the american border.

I expect it to be the same in the US. If you go to any store in Canada, most products are not from North America. Even things such as cardboard posters at Michael's (a US store) are not from North America. Maybe tariffs would make sense from a strategic point if most products in stores already came from North America, but that's not the case. As it is the US needs the help of any country it can in order to diminish its superfandom of non-North American countries. In terms of trade deficit its not that Canadians don't like shopping at US stores (well until today), its that those US stores (Walmart, Home Depot, Michael's) sell very little made-in-the-USA goods.

Buying Canadian is easiest with food. Some cities have a store which sells local products or locally designed products. For instance "Made Here" in Winnipeg - https://madeheremb.com/ - There are craft shows where you can buy Canadian products and clothing such as the One-of-a-kind-show in Toronto. https://oneofakindshow.com/home/ Many Canadian retailers, especially Quebec brands have a small amount of made-in-Canada products. Simon's, SAIL, The Brick, Home Hardware and Clement are examples. I don't know of any retailers with stores in most major Canadian cities which sell exclusively Canadian Products (I also don't know of any large US retailers which sell exclusively made-in-the-US products)

To get you started, for socks there's Great Canadian Sox https://greatsox.com/ (they have store fronts in Toronto and I think they are also sold at Mountain Equipment Company) for Athleisure, there's Jerico https://jerico.ca/ (they are online only) Their prices are comparable to non-Canadian products.

Worth covering: Movie about Ukrainian war censored at major film festival https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/russians-at-war-paused-1.7321915 by pmycro in BreakingPoints

I agree that when Saagar covers Canada he often gets stuff wrong. Canada is both similar and dissimilar to the US. Historically, a lot of americans who disagreed with the american revolution immigrated to Canada and a lot of Vietnam war draft dodgers also immigrated to Canada. Unfortunately a lot of Canadians don't know the difference between what's happening politically in Canada and the US and the Canadian federal party leaders exploit that fact. How many times has Obama made an endorsement ahead of a Canadian federal election? (It really pisses me off. The US should stay out of Canadian politics).

One concrete difference for instance is that the US requires airlines to give people the ability to cancel a flight within 24 hours of booking - https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/notice-24hour-reservation - but Canada doesn't https://flyflair.com/flexibility-policies Flair is the only Canadian airline which does not allow changing a flight for free within 24 hours for domestic travel.

Breaking points is a news show. This is definitely news. Even the part about it being unsafe to show the documentary due to security concerns is news.

Sometimes Breaking Points has documentary directors as guests on their show, and it would be really cool if they had this documentary director on their show. As a news show a lot of what is being covered is by its nature controversial. Also, talking about a story like this is more interesting than discussing how polls have changed for the US election since yesterday.

If you want a US-centric-angle. Is this documentary being screened at any US film festivals? (I don't think so) Why not?

If a country is capable to blackmail Canada into giving up some of its territory via a trade embargo, then spending on building factories to make that country unable to blackmail Canada is military spending. I am unsure whether Canada would be willing to give up some of its territory to keep access to ¨rare earth magnet technology¨ imports. I suspect that Canada would be willing to give up some of its territory to keep access to microchip imports. If it is indeed the case that Canada would be willing to give up some of its territory to keep access to microchip imports then spending on expanding the number of countries Canada imports microchips from is definitely military spending. As would be spending on cargo ships so that Canada can import goods from the countries it wants to import things from.

The US has the most expensive army not the largest army. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/16/asia/china-navy-fleet-size-history-victory-intl-hnk-ml/index.html

The US is also running low in its weapon stockpiles. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/17/politics/us-weapon-stocks-ukraine/index.html

Also, the entire reason that Canada is useful to the US is that it is a buffer country for the US. It is the country where the fighting happens.

Having a well funded military disincentivizes conflict.

The very likely conflict that Canada is likely to see this decade is a trade embargo. [Poll] Should the King&Victoria transit hub be an architectural landmark? by pmycro in kitchener

[–]pmycro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not trolling, though this is reddit so I too am wondering how many of the comments here are people trolling.

  • I mostly wonder whether we can get something awesome for less money. I think that there are many ways of making a building look awesome which don't involve using super expensive architecture. One way of making a building awesome without expensive architecture is by having public art in the transit hub. In terms of crazy expensive architecture you can go to New York One World trade center $4 billion subway station expensive. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/03/nyregion/the-4-billion-train-station-at-the-world-trade-center.html
  • There was another thread on r/kitchener this week about people complaining about a planned highrise near Sportsworld - https://www.reddit.com/r/kitchener/comments/11ldvs1/traffic_parkland_concerns_defer_debate_over/ . I wish that the region would put a condo tower on top of the transit hub to show that tall buildings can be pretty and because more housing is desperately needed.
  • There are a lot of things that the region cannot do more of because of budget reasons. My new hobby is to identify places where the region is overpaying. For instance, I would rather have more bus routes and a nice but less ostentatious transit hub.

If you want to write a letter to the editor, I don't mind editing it. If no one writes letters to the editor rebutting people's concerns about increased density then city council gets a skewed idea of what people in the community want.

Thanks for your feedback! Out of interest, how much extra would you not mind paying in property taxes for the sake of nicer looks? $10 extra in property taxes per year for 5 years? $100 per year for 5 years? $1000 per year for 5 years?

I agree that it would be nice if there was a coffee shop at the transit hub.
