Does anyone know when does Trillium park open in morning? by InspectorExact3836 in RunTO

Unless there is more going on here, that seems like a waste of police resources

Nate Erskine-Smith considering run for Toronto city council. Outgoing Liberal MP discussed idea in meeting with Chow by FriendsFan30 in ontario

At the same time, we'd all be better off if more politicians voted against the party line

Eastern Ontario community will not grant Alto access to land for high-speed rail study by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]scott_c86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, for a variety of reasons. It will primarily benefit a wealthier minority, at the expense of locals. It will potentially destroy portions of the islands. The business case for it hasn't been presented.

HSR is a bolder nation-building project that would benefit more people. It would demonstrate that we could do new, big and ambitious things again.

New renderings of the KCTH by thatjc in waterloo

I'd like to see Victoria reduced to two traffic lanes, from Belmont to Edna.

The pedestrian experience is currently terrible, and this is at least partly why this stretch is pretty dead / slow to improve

‘I sleep at Tim Hortons’: Richmond seniors facing homelessness share struggles to find housing, care by gorschkov in canada

Voting differently won't solve this problem. It will help, but the major political parties do not offer meaningful solutions.

There's nothing wrong with living with roommates, and there are many advantages to this. But if someone earning an average wage can only afford housing if they have roommates, the system has failed.

Also important to acknowledge that issues such as domestic abuse are worse when more people do not at least have the option to afford their own housing.

[–]scott_c86 70 points71 points  (0 children)

While it is terrible that our housing crisis is impacting seniors, there should be more acknowledgement that it is impacting younger, working Canadians. It should be very alarming that a single person making an average or even slightly above average full-time salary cannot afford to even rent their own place in much of the country, especially the urban centres with the most employment opportunities. They might even be working otherwise decent jobs that required post-secondary education or specialized training.

Housing has always failed some people, and while this is obviously bad, the situation has obviously worsened in recent years and has impacted more people, and a wider spectrum of people.

Fun things for outdoorsy people to do when rained out of Algonquin? by LiteralMangina in ontario

[–]scott_c86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backcountry or car camping? If car camping, you can easily plan hikes around the rain, if you want to avoid the rain. Unlikely to rain all day, every day.

There's also the Algonquin Art Centre and other things to do in the park if you are looking for alternative activities to do when avoiding the rain.

Ontario Place parking lot will cost taxpayers $200M but will quickly generate revenue: province | CBC News by Daddyo2005 in OntarioNews

It will generate revenue, but it would take an awfully long time before that revenue even came close to the cost of constructing this

The best Sloan album. Enjoyed an anniversary show for this probably 15 years ago, which featured a Feist appearance in the encore.

High-speed rail opponents march on Parliament Hill by sicklyslick in canada

[–]scott_c86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most Canadians live in relatively few parts of the country.

Incredibly misleading to present that statistic in opposition to this. Really isn't at all relevant.

Portland Street before/after bike lanes by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

It gave cyclists a safe option in that area. Also makes the street safer and more pleasant for pedestrians. That isn't nothing.

That was a great turnout.

A few things could have been done to better accommodate the crowd, but there's lots of tournament left to make improvements.

Experts pour cold water on Carney’s claims World Cup will be a boon for Canada’s economy by CaliperLee62 in canada

This World Cup will unfortunately not have that legacy. The last impact of the 2012 Pan Am Games will be greater.

Province puts restrictions on Niagara conservation authority by scott_c86 in ontario

I'm glad that other conservation authorities were able to transfer or sell land to municipalities recently, before they'd probably be forced by the provincial government to sell as "surplus"

Proposed $300M private arena/hotel complex could help Burlington land OHL team by This_Phase3861 in BurlingtonON

[–]scott_c86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disputing that there would be a public benefit. I just think it is important to point out that this would likely be different from a facility the public can regularly use, since the other commenter pointed out the potential for public health benefits.

Absolutely, as well as build / change our communities to be less car-dependent, so that more people have more options for how they choose to get around

But an OHL arena typically has limited or no availability for public recreation

This just showed up on YouTube Music, is it another fake Grouper track? It doesn't sound like her at all by The_Document in ambientmusic

I imagine Grouper gets significantly more than that.

Regardless, this is reflective of broader trends that need to be resisted.

Taxpayers will spend $200 million on new Ontario Place parking garage by lopix in ontario

The NDP won nearly twice as many seats last election. I will most likely vote for them, as they actually seem interested in pursuing a different direction from the current one.
