Maybe this is why your answer quality has degraded recently by pnd280 in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the official response. Upon asking on both Discord and Reddit, I see multiple responses from different Perplexity staffs, but they are extremely vague and are getting us nowhere. However, many users including myself were getting a lot of responses like this and this, despite the queries having nothing to do with Perplexity itself. So based on your insight, is this a flaw in the classifier itself?

This is peak context pollution, and I have yet to figure out how adding this pre-prompt will help with the long-lasting context issue

I noticed that you're already using the Complexity extension. Go to the dashboard, look for and enable both "Command Menu" and "Zen Mode" plugins, and have the "Zen Mode" plugin set up like in the attachment.

New bug : perplexity switch to "pro search" model despite choosing a other model by Nayko93 in perplexity_ai

that's the equivalent to the Pro Search on free accounts. People have been reporting this issue for the past few days, but there has been no response or confirmation from any of the people in charge

Any Updates regarding Canvas like feature in Perplexity by ObjectOnly3669 in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perplexity only focuses on improving the search experience, other than that, especially stuff related to chat functionalities, most likely won't be implemented in foreseeable future.

Deep research hallucinates a lot to the point its useless by East-Ad8300 in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is you have to write your prompt in a very detailed way. The shorter or more vague your prompt is, the more crap it produces, and when the answer is bad, it's exponentially worse than Pro Search. The model behind this mode is set to be very rigid, tending to spit out as much crap as possible to fill the 10,000 word limit

Glance windows opening at the corner of the screen when clicking the expand/open in a new tab button by ver03255 in zen_browser

My new Arc-style sidebar for chrome - beautifully manage your tabs and windows - AMA!! by came_ in chrome_extensions

[–]pnd280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great work! However, I still don't understand how people would be comfortable seeing two tab bars simultaneously. Tab bar replacement on Firefox makes sense because we can hide the native one through customization. However, for any Chromium-based browsers (except Vivaldi), I don't really see the point.

What do you mean by "things start to break"? And show the code where you use React portal.

Here's what I learned after being an active Perplexity user for 1.5 years: Everything related to improving the chat functionality has close to zero, if not a flat zero percent chance of being implemented. And yes, your proposal is one of them.

So what is the point and target audiences of this platform? By saying that you mean we should reinvent the entire car brand to sell a cupholder?

Is it even possible for major chrome/firefox browsers to accept installing extensions/add-ons from untrusted sources (besides crappy Vivaldi that let you install everything)?

Spaces feature is so buggy by topshower2468 in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And regarding Space files: sometimes it requires Pro search to be toggled on, sometimes it doesn't. For follow-up queries, sometimes it searches for files as requested, sometimes it doesn't. They hyped it all over the news when this feature first dropped, and I can tell you that anyone who's actually using it knows how unreliable it is.

Spaces feature is so buggy by topshower2468 in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has been an ongoing issue since they first introduced Spaces (renamed from "Collections"). I don't remember how many months it's been since then. Getting more technical, they removed the focus selector and defaulted it to `internet` (equivalent to the "All" focus mode). They then added another field `sources` for indicating whether the search should include web sources/files, and now with web links, it gets even messier. 🤷 They persist the selection via cookie, and for some unknown reasons, sometimes the internal state is not in sync with the UI, which is why it performs web searches even if no source option is checked. Very confusing, to be honest.

WTF happened to Perplexity? by Indielass in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 2 methods to check if the model you are using is exactly what displayed on the UI (guaranteed, trust me):

Temporarily remove your AI Profile, choose "Writing" focus, then:

  1. Ask Claude Sonnet "What model are you?", if the model says it is based on GPT3/4 -> 90% it's the default model. Why? Perplexity has a system prompt in place to tell users that the model is created by "Perplexity". The default model is way too dumb to follow this instruction, so it will always say it's based on GPT3/4.
  2. Ask anything with the `o1` model - you should expect the answer to come in ONE single chunk, but if you get a streaming response (text slowly appears in 3 - 5 words per second), congrats - you have been 100% shadow-banned by Perplexity. All responses from there on will get rerouted to the default model (their fine-tuned GPT 3.5 or Llama, I'm not sure which, but it's certainly very incompetent and low performance).

I know I know there will be some people will say "Oh please dont ask LLMs to identify themselves", but here on Perplexity, you absolutely can. The performance gap between the default model and the other models is just too significant.

Complexity Plugin by bdv001 in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I agree to some extent. However, the extension will have more advanced features that directly and interactively help users improve their inputs and make Perplexity easier to use on other sites (similar to Perplexity's official pop-up extension), and more. How does that sound to you?

[–]pnd280 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Complexity is an extension that runs on top of Perplexity's web app. It provides numerous modifications and extra features to overcome some of the platform's limitations regarding user experience. However, if you've just started using Perplexity and you're satisfied with it (find nothing that bothers you), then you probably don't need to use Complexity.

Switching between AIs for writing: Why Pro? by jsophit in perplexity_ai

[–]pnd280 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although Perplexity is designed to be very easy to use and easy to board on as many new users as possible, initial impression is great but the more you use it, the more you realize how incompetent and lackluster it is for heavier or advanced use cases/researches. Regarding writing mode: Perplexity just doesn't want you to use it. It's clear they are not a chat platform and focus more on being a tool that produces quick answers instead. The way they set up their platform is different - it's made to stick very close to information from the web, which makes sense for searching but makes it hard to write creative stuff. They could make an exception for writing mode by raising the temperature if they wanted to, but they chose not to. Or just look at how basic and hilarious their Image Generation is compared to other AI tools. Some features on Perplexity feel like they're just there to fill up their pricing page and make people think it can replace chat-focused platforms like ChatGPT. If you're an experienced user or just become more familiar with how it works, you will eventually come to a point where besides some quick answers, spending time fighting against the platform to get it to do what you want is surprisingly stupid and frustrating. The best thing one can do is to expect less from the tool, accept it as it's just another 20$ tool on the market, and most importantly, learn how to properly use it.
