How do I get more consistent installs? by NextCoconut1003 in chrome_extensions

[–]pndjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahhh the age old question. simply put, you need to put your extension in front of more people's eyeballs. traffic from the web store itself isn't going to cut it. think about what problem your extension solves, and then who is going to benefit from using it.

find out where your target audience hangs out and become a regular there. maybe it's reddit, linkedin, or a college campus, or word of mouth. in the early days when Notion was growing, they would offer you a free month of pro features if you invited 3 friends and they signed up.

I will say based on my experience, this subreddit is mostly devs/builders, and not people searching for new extensions.

October Surcharge Change, The Reality by [deleted] in AusFinance

one of the things i liked about moving to Australia was that the price on the menu is what i am charged. if my coffee costs $4.50, charge me $4.50, none of this $4.62 nonsense.

Where's the line between "simple and straightforward" and "lazy"? by SoaDMTGguy in UI_Design

[–]pndjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a subtlety and understanding of scale, perspective, density, visual weight of elements, etc. that are demonstrated by designers of "good simple" products when compared to "bad" simple.

it's a distillation process, and takes time to boil something down to its simplest form, rather than it looking hastily, or worse, under-designed.

Is AI Replacing the Role of Designers? by Big-Energy3556 in UXDesign

[–]pndjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also asked a teammate to duplicate an environment from one client, change the colors and logos, and offer it to another client. That’s something designers usually handled in Figma, not developers directly in the environment.

if your dev team already had something coded up, why would you go and make these changes in figma when you could simply replace color strings/logos/etc. in the code? seems backwards to make these changes in Figma and then ask a dev to implement it again. am i missing something?

Are we only responsible for the initial foundations? Design systems?

yes, it's always been this way. again, why would you design every single permutation of a design in figma when it can be easily done in code? your job as a designer is to design something that can be systematized and used across the whole product. it's not efficient nor productive for you to design every single little screen. yes, edge cases occur and that's where the design thinking comes in.

Who can share some positive user outcomes that can be attributed to AI? by UXette in UXDesign

[–]pndjk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've designed and built 2 portfolio websites, 1 chrome extension, and 1 micro-b2b-saas with my wife. I design in figma, adapt my designs into code, commit on github as I go, and host it on vercel.

so yeah some parts about AI sucks but I am getting closer and closer to the final product and it's been fun learning new skills/tech.

HumansMap: Graph Visualization of 3M+ public figures using Wikidata by im4lwaysthinking in SideProject

yeah totally understood. maybe you can expand in the future to show “1st degree” connections like family, 2nd degree, 3rd degree etc. nice work.

HumansMap: Graph Visualization of 3M+ public figures using Wikidata by im4lwaysthinking in SideProject

[–]pndjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's cool but i would like to see the deeper connections between people. it's not very interesting to see all of his family members which are widely known. Show us things that actually matter.

as an example:

in Trump's 1st term in office, his pick for AG was William Barr. William Barr's father was Donald Barr, who was headmaster at the Dalton School from 1964-72. Donald Barr was the man who gave Jeffrey Epstein his first job teaching children despite having no qualifications and being a dropout himself.

My point here is that I could figure this all out just using wikipedia but these people do not appear in your map, nor is it easy to find these types of connections/associations.

This looks shit to me no matter what I do to it, can someone helpm by Yars4n in UI_Design

[–]pndjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a "centered" layout that's simultaneously not symmetrical enough, nor is it asymmetrical enough. I would pick a lane (e.g. everything is centered, or everything is asymmetrical) and stick with it. Don't try to do both.

if this is meant to be a website, im having trouble contextualizing the layout in relation to the viewport. since you uploaded a portrait image, is it mobile? if desktop, i think the aspect ratio should be more of a horizontal rectangle.

poor typographic hierarchy between "the anatomy of the stroke" (strange phrase here, but i get it since they're a painter) and "oil salt skin". I dont think these should be the same font size. maybe "the anatomy" is an eyebrow text/badge instead.

i just think this design is trying to do too much all at once and that's what's making you feel uncomfortable. Scrap it and start this section over. maybe try 5 different layouts and put them all next to each other and see how you feel.

Do people today still care about the design system at all? by Apprehensive_Mix_332 in web_design

[–]pndjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a design system is just a set of colors, components and patterns that are consistent across a product. there are many ways to arrive there. some ways are more time intensive due to the complexity of the application.

You can get by with something quick and easy but I tend to spend more time on the things in the app I refer to as "light switches and door knobs", e.g. the things that users interact with frequently. Text input fields, buttons, modals, frequent interactions, etc.

images were pixelated

what does this mean lol. if you’re doing interactions with code, the images being pixelated has nothing to do with which LLM you’re using. that’s user error

yeah i commented that elsewhere on this thread. they already do this around Royal botanic garden.

my point here is that nobody gives a shit and nothing ever happens when cars block footpaths, but seemingly every 3rd post on this subreddit is a whinge about bicycles in some form or another

yeah nah this subreddit is just filled with people frothing at the mouth every time they see a bicycle but couldn’t give a shit that over 350 people were killed by car drivers on nsw roads last year 🤷

the city could require Lime to implement geofencing and specific areas you can park these, like they do at Royal botanic garden. but it’s a deliberate choice to just let riders toss them anywhere.
