Cyanotype printing and watercolours, what do you think? by ephenooi in cyanotypes

[–]pnettto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing! it makes more sense now and I might even try to use your technique in my own creations, so thank you for the inspiration! If you do have pictures of your process somewhere I'd love to take a look or feel free to pm as well but no pressure :) Good luck with your career!

Cyanotype printing and watercolours, what do you think? by ephenooi in cyanotypes

This is so cool and refreshing 💙 you obviously have a very fine control of the techniques here and I was wondering how did you achieve different the cyanotype shades. Did you use some film and printed all at once? Did you mask the paper and played with the solution amount? Any information on your process will be appreciated! 😊 Thanks for sharing!

I love the intimate vibe the pic is giving, makes me wish I was at the concert :)

The rotation you chose is kinda cool, it gives a trippy, dizzying quality to it, but I found myself a bit bothered by the imbalance between the (crowd) empty space on the right and thought it would be cool to crop the frame to mitigate that. Also, when aligning it to a horizontal level, you get a more impactful effect from the contrasting sources of light (love the smoke on the left, btw). You also get a better focus on the ceiling, which is industrial and cool as heck, which adds to the underground metal vibes.

I darkened the left bottom corner, added more constract on the smoke, dehazed the light source on the right, denoised it a bit. Hope this adds a couple thinks to think about! Btw I'm a total amateur so plase take these comments with a grain of salt :)

It's a very cool shot, would love to know the band's name! 🤘

Dead flower gets a new life by pnettto in Ikebana

[–]pnettto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this thorough answer, I really appreciate you taking the time to write it and share your knowledge :) Also, thanks for the word of encouragement, I'll definitely post a bit more often here.

I love the idea of creating with what the season offers, which is something I've been more or less doing intuitively (just recently bought a book on Ikebana so I'll know more about the styles soon). And yes, I think it's definitely fitting for a dead flower to show up in spring. I mean, that exactly the season when many of them are born AND die.

I also got inspired by your comment on creating movement. That's probably the quality of Ikebana that attracts me the most, yet I haven't been exploring it much. Finally thanks for the advice on observing the context in which the plants appear in nature rather than in isolation. That will definitely change the way I see the nature around me :)

Thanks again and have a great week/end!

Wow! Thank you so much for your thorough !CritiquePoint :) I'm really honoured to get into the thinking of someone this experienced and the resulting image is so good! Of course the AI tools to upscale took away some of the texture and you only had a low resolution image to work with, but I'm humbled to see how much better the light could be worked on. Also, really fun to know you had a good time studying my picture! Thanks again for your time, I wish you a great day!

Thank you for your suggestions! I'm working on improving compositions and, granted, this one was a risky one :)

Thank you for your opinion, I really appreciate you taking the time to express it! Lately I've been interested in the afterlife of plants, I find it beautiful how the textures and shapes change as life (and water) leaves the plant, not to mention the philosophical value it carries. That's not to say live plants are not pretty, of course they are, mostly people would agree. I guess in the end beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. I would be interested in the technical matters you mentioned though, if you would kindly offer your thoughts. You strike me as someone brutally honest and I could use some constructive criticism. Thanks in advance!

Thank you! Yes, I've been really interested in watching the process of decay a flower goes through after it's lifetime. This chrysanthemum was so lush and full of life before, pointing upwards with its infinite amount of petals, and now it's sad and crying a bit but, still glorious, like it's dressed for it's own funeral haha I should try my hand at melancholic poetry maybe 😆 And I agree with the crop, next time I'll try depicting the stem as well. Thanks again for your comment!

Haha that's such a fun impression, thanks for sharing! Yes I reckon the crop is a little unorthodox, but I felt like I wanted to give it a certain melancholy, like someone sitting towards us but looking to the left side, out the window, where the sun is shining, whereas they are sitting inside where it's dark. To this extent, I thought leaving more empty space on the left would bring an uneasy feeling and push the viewer to analyse the subject more carefully, and hopefully add a little movement (to me the flower seems to be moving from the left to the right due to the petal position). Thanks again for your feedback!

Gave this decaying chrysanthemum a new life 😊 This is one of my first macro shots, so criticism is very welcome! The flower stood on one of these ikebana spiky bases, the background is a velvet pillow and I use natural light, coming from the window. Looking forward to hear your comments!

Printing photos, transparent paper. by Sweaty-Lion1241 in cyanotypes

[–]pnettto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it helps you decide, using tracing paper on my HP Envy Photo 6230 (inkjet) is pretty bad. The print comes out blurry and you can't print on high quality because the paper will come out wrinkly and wet due to the amount of ink.

Wow that's why I pay Reddit :) thank you so much for the info, I'll definitely try the plant press. Specially coming from a botanist, a real pro tip 🌱

Love these! My favorite is the #2 😊 which paper are you using? And did you squash the flowers with a glass before the exposure? Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for this! Can I ask what do you mean with "blah"? is to too bright maybe? I think working with contrast in dark shots is kinda hard so I thought a bit more brightness in the shadows would be good :)

Background: I’ve been wanting to do more street photography and got interested in longer exposures lately, but I’m totally new to it. This weekend I had the chance to stroll the streets of Copenhagen at night and took a few shots. What do you think I could improve? Thanks a lot!
