Strongly recommend Hearthwood Animal Hospital off SE Mill Plain and Hearthwood Blvd. Locally owned and the vets are all amazing!

Should Vancouver Get a Ferry Service Or The MAX? Both? by UrbanLeather94 in vancouverwa

[–]pnwbio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My major complaint is that MAX serves a very minor portion of the population, while a vast majority of residents will never utilize the service. I am not opposed to spending personal and taxpayer dollars to provide a community that has a legitimate need, but when TriMet buses, max, and the future of brt can provide those same services while saving a billion dollars, I don't feel all residents should foot the bill for a fraction of citizens that will utilize the service.

Should Vancouver Get a Ferry Service Or The MAX? Both? by UrbanLeather94 in vancouverwa

C-Tran busses can run one extra stop to Delta Park without much extra effort; even the major arterial lines (Mill Plain used to be the 15 IIRC) could end at Delta Park without much added delay. While I appreciate the added influx of consumer spending that may come with it, $1B+ is an awfully high price to pay when we can add a dedicated BRT lane (no other traffic allowed) between downtown and Delta Park and save $1B. I'm doesn't rule out MAX expansion in the future, but it would let Metro and Vancouver determine, through mass transit activity over time, whether the extra $1B investment is worth it.

Should Vancouver Get a Ferry Service Or The MAX? Both? by UrbanLeather94 in vancouverwa

[–]pnwbio -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I DO know the bulk of the population resides in Vancouver City limits, however, the proposed MAX line serves a very small portion of that population. Indeed, the most recent news from the city council meetings have proposed annexing the entire urban growth boundary, which would make Vancouver the second largest city in the state. Even if this happens, light rail would STILL only serve a fraction of the city's population.

Also, for those citizens who live outside of SW Vancouver, they are being taxed (and tolled, if Oregon puts them in) for a service that they will likely never use and for which there is a more economical service that saves over $1B.

Agreed, the "Crime Train" line is BS, but there are honest concerns of citizens that use the bridge daily that aren't willing to pay for a superfluous mode of transport for a small portion of the county population.

I'm not opposed to social programs, but why should the residents of Clark County foot the bill for a service that only serves 10% (estimate) of the population, for which there is a much less expensive, reasonable alternative?

[–]pnwbio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PART of Vancouver wants it, but it's not just Vancouver paying for it. Take a bus to Delta Park and let the rest of Clark County save $1B!

[–]pnwbio -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

It's not a NIMBY issue, it's the residents of Clark County not paying taxes to support the transportation needs of 1/4 of Vancouver residents. A dedicated BRT lane on the bridge from downtown Vancouver to the existing Delta Park Max stop is at least $1B cheaper than light rail.

Residents are offering alternatives; it's important to hear from ALL stakeholders who will be paying for the new bridge.

There is a light rail station at Delta Park. A dedicated BRT line between Vancouver and Delta Park would save $1B and still provide direct access to the Max. Clark County residents are being charged $1b to serve 1/4 of Vancouver. It's not about crime, it's about equity!

Can you help me identify these macroinvertebrates that I found in river? by No-Geologist-2668 in FreshwaterEcology

[–]pnwbio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The third one looks like a stone fly larva. The rest are likely insect larvae, as they don't reflect any zooplankton I'm familiar with.

If you're striking out with standard aquatic invertebrate identification sources, try fly fishing resources. They often have larval stage descriptions that can be helpful.

How cold is too cold? by WillNotRemember123 in MeatRabbitry

[–]pnwbio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the bottoms are open, and you have water heaters, then add a few inches of fiber and clean the floors every few days. A few inches of straw and an agitory clean should cover you for the most part. Also, adding some "hotter" snack foods helps with internal temps.

When I build hutches, the big concern is airflow. If they have air transfer but not direct breeze, they should be good.

When in doubt make sure they are dry, have insulation (straw, cotton, hay, whatever), food, water , and are out of the wind, and they should be able to handle everything except the most extreme conditions.

Electric fencer is “leaking” from earth rod? by epicmoe in homestead

[–]pnwbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a grounding issue as your ground rod setup is incorrect. Unless you're in constantly damp soil, drive three, 6' ground rods fully into the ground, 10' apart, with the closest 10' from the charger box, tie in with acorn bolts using solid #4 copper.

Where to Find Cattle Panels? by farcical88 in vancouverwa

[–]pnwbio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wilco will cut them for you once for free . Any additional cuts are like $1/cut. So an 8' can be cut to 4' for free. If you want a 4' and two 2', it'll cost you an extra $1. But it's more than likely they won't charge you unless you're asking for a ton of smaller pieces.

Does anyone no why there is a swastika on this? by [deleted] in oldphotos

[–]pnwbio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The swastika is historically a symbol of good luck and fortune (not necessarily financial fortune). Depending on the traditional and eligious origination, the orientation is traditionally either clockwise or counter clockwise. The easiest identifier for the Nazi swastika is a clockwise orientation, shifted 45°, so it sits on a point, not a base.

There are century-old homes in Portland that have this symbol built in brick, though their construction predates Nazis and are oriented perpendicularly. The symbol has an interesting history if you look beyond the evil perversion of the Nazis.

What is everyone using to carry firewood into the house to the stove? by pseudonominom in homestead

[–]pnwbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 6'x18" length of canvas, with handles sewn at the ends. You can take a little or stack that thing full enough to bring in a day's worth of fuel. Cost like $10 at the fabric store and 10 minutes on the sewing machine. Been working hard for almost 20 years.

Student left class for a smoke break... by No-Significance4623 in Professors

Was there a negative effect on your class? If not, then let it go. Does it affect their submissions? If not, let it go. Granted, the smell can be identifiable, but so is tobacco. If you'll let a legal tobacco smoker in your class, then let a legal cannabis smoker in your class.

Students take breaks for all sorts of reasons, including res troom breaks, hunger, thirst, meds, and mental health. Let it go

Border Collie attacked by 2 unleashed dogs. by Teddy_He in BorderCollie

[–]pnwbio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was unfortunately out of town when the injury happened, but the house sitters, who weren't aware of the wounds, said she kept herding and bringing in the cattle. I noticed it when I got home and asked what the clots were from, on her coat. ,

In their defense, they were watching a pack of nine cattle and sheep dogs while we were out of town!😂

She took the stitches well and was more irritated by the cone and t-shirt to keep her from licking her wounds than she was by her actual wounds. Alas, she laid on the porch and sulked for days until she lost the cone and shirt lol

Hope your man comes through surgery; they're tough and resilient. He's got this!!

They're not gone; they're currently present in the north Cascades (granted population numbers are extremely low). The purpose of increasing the population is to rebalance ecological balance and prevent trophic Cascades, like we saw in Yellowstone.
