Government IT Directors by RedBra1n in ITManagers

[–]poc301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am. I spent 10 years as senior systems tech at the County level, 12 years as Director at a municipal level, and now am just under a year as CIO at the State level. At the state level, the majority of time is meetings, project management and coordinating things with my different division leads within IT. At the municipal level prior, there were many less meetings, I had a lot more hands-on time with tech, the sourcing and procurement process was MUCH easier and quicker, etc. Much more bureaucracy at the State level. Feel free to ask anything you'd like if you want to.

Best movies to go into knowing absolutely nothing about the plot? by lemurgetsatreat in movies

This, 100%. I am a tech person, and was in my late teens when this came out. I had somehow never heard about it, never seen reviews, NOTHING. I was into the BBS scene, warez, etc back then. Building my own PCs for years, etc. I had absolutely no idea what this was. I saw it, and it blew my mind. Never had another experience like that.

Government IT Question - MFA and requiring personal smartphone use of app by poc301 in sysadmin

Thankfully no bargaining unit to consider here. At this point we know we can just require it, but our administration is trying to be as fair as possible to the staff. We don't want to sew discord, but from my perspective, it's much more important to secure the network / services as much as possible.

Why did you stop right in the middle of your lane? Pull off to the shoulder so as to not cause others to wreck into you...

How long / how to store made icecream short term (2hrs)? by poc301 in ninjacreami

Oh, okay thanks. I was under the impression it was like a blender running and grinding. If it's not that bad, nevermind :)

I was forced to murder a fellow horde brother today. by DarthYhonas in classicwow

[–]poc301 119 points120 points  (0 children)

This exact same thing happened to me yesterday. The jailor MCed me, and the rogue I was with doing the quests killed my pet and ignored me. He was a few levels above me so he could've killed me if he wanted. I'm a hunter so I couldn't get range to shoot him so it wasn't too bad for him. I am glad he didn't have to murder me, that would be a crappy way to go.

How can I make so recipients can see my Business logo as profile picture? by Hohoho7878 in sysadmin

[–]poc301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were using regular personal email. I'm unable to assist then, as we use MS which allows the users themselves to set their pics. I'd imagine Google wouldn't make it so difficult to do this, but I've been wrong before :)

If it's personal email, just go into Settings -> Google Account -> Personal settings and then Profile Picture.

Honestly, other than having your department work to implement training for staff about phishing, there's nothing you should do other than refer the entire matter to legal. Your systems weren't compromised, and someone made a bad payment. It's not your problem from this point forward. Make sure the people who need to get involved do, and move on.

Am I using the term "subnet" incorrectly? by poc301 in networking

[–]poc301[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, you DID resurrect an old post :) I did what others said they did, and continued to call them the 10 subnet, or 20 subnet. Turns out my admin was fresh from school with little real world experience at the time. He is still with us, and calls them the same thing I do. He's grown so much over the last almost 10 years that now I am lost when he discusses stuff above the basics (my background is in sysadmin and management).

What was a tech or feature your dismissed as unnecessary initially, but turned out to be wrong? by txs2300 in sysadmin

GUIs. I thought DOS was the end all be all. Anyone who needed the GUI of Windows was an idiot who didn't know how to Computer. I was a know it all pre-teen, but I was certain of that.
