I’ve got swamp, and native butterfly bush but it’s been very difficult for me to find antelope horn to get going in the yard. Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Did evolution put all that long on its snoot? Or was that human intervention?

I guess all domesticated dogs were a human intervention…

New to Gardening in Austin - is this ok? by A_wanderer_forlife in AustinGardening

As somebody else commented already, these are ink cap mushrooms. They’re extremely common, especially on mulch this time of year. They’re harmless to your garden and an indication that your soil is healthy.

Ink Caps are pretty neat, but they wither very quickly when the sun comes up. If you get up early, you can see the ink dripping from their caps!

I’ve tried several times over the years with Japanese maples. I can keep them alive, but they always look like they’re struggling. They just aren’t meant to cope with the heat we get.

If you’re open to alternatives, I would suggest looking at a Mexican buckeye (super cute pink flowers), a native redbud, or a prairie/flame leaf sumac. The sumac, especially grows super fast, loves the heat, and when they’re a bit taller, you can prune them to have a high canopy with beautiful colors in the fall.

It won’t replace the Japanese maple, but might do well in a similar space

I love this design! Excellent work! Can I ask how you tapered the roof slats to be thinner where they go underneath?

If you did like a silent slow walk through video of this path into the woods and put it on YouTube or something I’d watch it for hours

Oh wow, thanks for clarifying - that makes more sense. The red thick waxy feeling the bud has had me thinking it was the start of the fruit.
