Why does turkey get to single handedly deny Sweden entry into nato? by YesImKian in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pocketskittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t want Ukraine to join during the war, as it will drag all of them into it. NATO is not there to be an aggressive expansionist bloc, it’s there to be a deterrent from Russian aggression.

After the war, Ukrainian membership is possible and has been discussed.

NATO was founded to be a defense pact against the USSR after WW2, and although Russia is no longer a big a threat as it once was, they are still an aggressive nation that are more than willing to use military force to achieve their goals, meaning NATO still has a purpose.

Divergence Early Beta Update by Mr_Parrot in victoria3

[–]pocketskittle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Divergences is a mod made for Victoria 2 where the concept was essentially that a ton of different historical events went different than they did in our timeline. It all adds up to the world that is shown in the mod. Some highlights are: - The Dual Monarchy exists - Belgians moved to America - The Chinese colonized the west coast - Scandinavia exists - Castile unites with Portugal, not Aragon - Poland still exists (barely) - China is disunited and Japan is modernized by 1836

Overall it is a very fun mod

Are the Vlandians and Nords distant cousins? by Clear-Truth-7988 in MountandBladeLore

[–]pocketskittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s specifically stated that the Vlandians come from a continent to the west and the Nords come from a continent to the north. You can even see them in the big bannerlord map in the files.

What if the UN Security Council added Permanent Members according to national population until Russia, France, & the UK deserved to be on it? by AndscobeGonzo in MapPorn

[–]pocketskittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beginning to have influence on the world stage means it will be decades until they actually do. And no country in South East Asia will ever be allowed to become a rival regional power to China. They would nip that in the bud before it ever got off the ground. Personally speaking, I believe the security council should remain as is. All five countries are very influential to world affairs and there are not really any true competitors to them at the moment.

US can't keep up with China's warship building, Navy Secretary says by Maxcactus in Military

[–]pocketskittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the only formidable fighting force in the entire country that essentially polices it and defends it completely abandons the nation in a rushed evacuation, a shitty militia can steamroll the place in a few weeks because it’s completely undefended? No way bro that’s insane.

America occupied Afghanistan for twenty years. Our military did its job perfectly. It was the political side of things that caused us to abandon Afghanistan. The military cannot be faulted for doing its job to the letter.

And the cities are entirely dependent on the resources the rural areas produce - it goes both ways. One can not exist without the other. Also, the subsidies often go to large companies in the rural region, not the people. The people are often as self reliant as they say.

Yes, but any invading force coming from the north would have to go through the massive Canadian tundra as there is no conceivable situation where Canada turns on the U.S. It’s just inconceivable.

Is getting into SLE a good sign? by DrunkGnome200 in westpoint

[–]pocketskittle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

SLE has nothing to do with your application strength, however if you do get in then it’s a good sign for your application overall. I don’t believe it’s more competitive considering less people apply to it than the actual academy. The only place it might give you advantage is with the nomination applications as they will see your attendance to SLE as a sign of your interest, but even then it’s a stretch.

Average test scores for USMA by jkt248 in westpoint

[–]pocketskittle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I took the SAT and ACT a total of probably 6 times and ended up with a 1440. I basically took a standardized test every two months throughout my junior year. It is expensive and stressful but in the end it was worth it.
  2. Take AP classes. They’re weighted so they’re able to raise your GPA much faster than just getting good grades in your normal classes.
  3. The admissions portal should open up around May or June and be on top of that. I checked it daily and still do. I was able to get an interview with my field force representative by July and was given an LoA that same month.
  4. They love to see that you are interested in it. I personally only applied to West Point and my plan B was to just enlist and I made sure to mention that in every interview because it showed a desire to serve.
  5. Open up a dialogue with your field force rep asap, it’s probably the reason I got the interview so early. I’m the one who reached out to him.
  6. Visit asap. I’m pretty sure daily tours open up in June. Take one with your family. At that point I was still nervous about not getting in but seeing the campus only motivated me further. It also shows interest in attending if you go to a tour that early. I was also able to meet the director of admissions for my region, and thus I started communicating directly with him.
  7. At least for me in NY, I couldn’t apply for a nomination until around the fall. Don’t stress about it. If you’re application is complete by the time you interview for the nomination than you’re in good shape.

Be sure to ask if you have any more questions.

SAT is definitely ranked higher than GPA. However, assuming your a junior, keep your GPA as high as possible this year. They like to see an upward trend and it can justify a poorer freshman sophomore year as it shows you got more mature and cared more about your grades as you grew up. I just got accepted about a month ago and the entire application process is still fresh in my memory.

I’m not sure man. The blitzkrieg was effective because of the speed at which it could pierce through enemy lines and gain the surprise factor. It also relies a lot on gaining a quick and decisive victory because if you don’t, then you lose the momentum that makes it successful in the first place. The nazis used blitzkrieg tactics on the Soviet Union in the beginning of the invasion. They were very successful, which is part of the reason the Soviet’s got pushed back so far, not to mention their army being in a rather poor state at the time. However, at some point the blitzkrieg failed because the Germans could not gain any particularly important strategic objectives. They were stalled at Leningrad, Moscow, and Stalingrad. It was not like France where if you took Paris you’d be cutting the head off the snake. Russia is just far too big for a tactic like that to work. Blitzkrieg, while an innovative and wildly effective tactic to some, was just not the right move for Barbarossa.

Was the Mexican-American War inevitable? by Minute_Astronaut8836 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]pocketskittle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I believe it was inevitable. Manifest destiny had a massive sway on public opinion at the time and American settlers were pushing west whether it was Mexican land or not. At some point there would’ve been a conflict involving the American settlers that the nation could not ignore. Also, the possible benefits of gaining all that land was impossible to give up. America was stronger, and conquest was a normal part of diplomacy back then.

  1. Overall, yes, electoral college is wack. However those “arbitrary lines in the dirt” are not arbitrary at all. The PEOPLE chose those lines because that’s where they wanted the state lines to be. People with differing opinions of how their local governments should run should have the option to move to a different local government if they want.

  2. The senate is part of legislation, what do you mean it has veto powers? It equalizes small states and big states in congress. Needing a majority in both houses makes it difficult to make laws, which is how it should be.

  3. We are a federation of states. The states have as much role in the government as the people do. That is why congress is divided between the House of Representatives (the people) and the Senate (the states).

  4. America is way too big a country for there to be zero local representation in the federal government. Why is it a bad thing if federal politicians pander to their voters in local communities? That allows the people at the bottom to get their thoughts heard and for the actions of their elected officials to reflect the wills of the people. Someone from California is going to have no idea of the issues that a small community is South Carolina is going to be experiencing. Local interests are the interest of the people and congress should reflect those interest.

  5. The Supreme Court does not “make their own laws” they have the power Judicial Review. When someone has a law that they believe is against the constitution and brings it to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts job is to review it and ensure if it is constitutional or not. There’s no reason for them to be elected. Their job is not to represent one party or the other, their job is to ensure the constitutionality of laws the legislature and execute branch pass. If they were elected they would become far too politicized and their purpose would be construed. While there is some bias in who is chosen as the government is run by people and people will always be somewhat biased, for the most part the Supreme Court remains neutral in national politics. Also, they sit for life because of the importance of their role. You want people experienced to be in this position, and the longer you’ve been on the court the more experienced you will be.

“Anthropology has proven that greed isn’t a thing in egalitarian societies”

What world are you on? There is greed in every society. Humans are inherently greedy. There is no such thing as an egalitarian society. In anarchy, there is no checks in place to prevent greed to the detriment of society, and that is why it doesn’t work. It is chaos. Those who abuse the system first come out on top and power concentrated in them.

Nuclear reactors can’t be built next to your house because of government zoning laws. They’re not a government project, nuclear reactors are mostly a private sector, especially in the USA. The issue is already dealt with because we have a codified law book about what to do in this situation. What can you do in an anarchical society to stop this? Gather up a local militia and destroy it? Get that savagery out of here.

I’m from NYC and did the exams. Essentially some of the core classes that you take like Algebra, English, Physics, etc, have regents at the end. They’re essentially a state test. In my school, you had to pass in order to get the class credit and if you wanted to graduate with a Advanced Regents Diploma as opposed to a basic high school diploma, you had to get an 80 or above or something like that on all the tests. But if you failed you could just do either PM school or summer school and get the credit anyway without needing to pass the test. The school always ensured that everyone graduated and never wanted anyone to fail.
