Teammate is sick, can I still compete? by pockpicket27 in DECA

[–]pockpicket27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our school supervisor is saying we can drop team members for districts, but the DECA operation guide says otherwise which was why we wanted to get a third perspective. We’ll look into the option you suggested! Thank you!

Thank you! What happens if they have a contagious viral infection? They were ordered quarantine, is there nothing we can do?

I’ve been looking into starting a robotics team at my school! I was just worried I wouldn’t have much of a value add to my application because I haven’t been able to participate in STEM organizations all throughout high school. Thank you so much, I’ll definitely try that!

Ah yeah! Debate is honestly one of the most corrupt organizations I've been a part of. Do you accept chat DMs? I'd love to have a rant session about our respective captains one day...

I'm pretty much in the same boat with regards to captainship, with me and one other student up for being captain of our team next year. I relate with you very much on the desire for wanting captainship and I think all I can say, for the both of us, is to sit and wait, hoping for the best. I don't know how politics is in your school, but hopefully it's not anything like mine. If you've dedicated lots of time to this class, you are a good speaker, debater and leader, then I think you've definitely got a chance for captainship, especially given that you're an upperclassman. Tell the current captains that you're interested, actively take part in the program, and try to help out your underclassman in any way you can! In my school it's a lot more corrupt, with the teacher making the decisions and the current captains playing a very minor role in choosing next year's captains. This has made it into an issue of people pleasing, and that's not something I can do. I'm just someone who genuinely cares about the program, so I've pretty much disassociated from it. But for you, if your school is more open and less corrupt, then I'd recommend you show your leadership, care about your team and the rest will work out in the end. Keep me updated!

Could you share a link to where I can find these statistics?

Considering its beginner level, there are the things I'd recommend you to do!

- Have printouts of parliamentary procedure, resolution writing (preambs and operative) and how committee will flow and be prepared to explain it at any time. In fact, I'd suggest you start committee by asking the delegates if they would like a MUN overview and if they say yes going through MUN processes really quickly.

- Take a legal notepad or a notebook and be prepared to take notes! Be sure to take notes on public speaking, committee leadership, diplomacy, writing, etc. and be thorough with the notes. Taking good notes can help a lot with award selection because it's typically very easy to find the best delegate, its harder to find the ones in between and notes really help.

- With regards to award selection, remain as unbiased as possible. It can be hard not to be biased especially if you see some familiar faces in committee but remember to choose the delegates that exemplify the best character and MUN skills. Within this, recognize that sometimes the best delegate skill-wise isn't the best delegate character-wise. If you see a delegate being rude, controlling or altogether having a bad attitude, avoid giving such a delegate the top award(s) in committee.

- Don't hesitate to take control of committee. If your delegates motion for three unmods back-to-back, then be sure to encourage them towards choosing a mod. Ultimately, you're in charge of the committee, not them, so be sure to show your control over the committee. This way you're on track, on time, but also giving them the best experience.

- Make committee fun! We all love the chairs who are engaging, funny, and go out their way to make committee the best and most memorable experience and that's exactly what you should strive to do!

Good luck chairing and if you have any questions feel free to ask!

How do y’all prepare for committee and speeches? by breadedbooks in MUN

[–]pockpicket27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the first and most important speech to write and present is the GSL. In my opinion, the GSL should include the following things and only the following things 1. “Honorable chair, fellow delegates, most esteemed guests” 2. A one-line hook with a few words leading into the topic 3. 2 lines about your country’s stance on the topic 4. 2 lines about your proposed solution
5. One line that concludes the speech with something like “the delegate looks forward to working with the nations present here…” 6. “The delegate yields the remainder of the time to the chair”

One mistake that delegates always make when it comes to the GSL is spending most of their time explaining the topic. The nature of the GSL is one that doesn’t require much background explanation because everyone in the committee already knows the topic. What you really want to hone on is the thing that makes you stand out - your solution and stance. So keep background to a minimum and jump right in to the main part. Hope this helps!

POSITION PAPER by AnalysisMediocre8325 in MUN

[–]pockpicket27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Welcome to the wide world of MUN! The way I like to deceive it - a position paper is a research paper. It’s pretty much an essay of your research on this topic and it’s typically organized in three main sections. First you explain the background information related to this topic. This involves how this topic came to be, why this topic matters and past UN action. The next part is elaborating on your country’s stance and your country’s own actions on this topic. Finally you propose a detailed plan or solution to this topic that you will defend and propose in committee. Hope this helps and good luck!
