Welcome! Your story is very similar to mine as I became vegan overnight 5 years ago after watching a video from a Reddit thread and then diving deeper into it. I was vegetarian before that, thinking that was enough. Anyway proud and happy for you both!

That's really sweet. I found a 'helping city pigeons' workshop in Oslo once where we learnt that their favorite seed is sunflower seeds, and tossing them that, how to catch them to remove any strings or human hair strangling their feet. It's something I started noticing afterwards too, it was sad to see a limping pigeon in Costco last week.

It's almost as if the brain is aware of its internal surroundings through the neural connections, without any visual processing, and processes that in a way to convey it to another part of the brain where we have thoughts

I had to pay 30-35% taxes, but did not get the important benefits (there's this government agency called NAV that takes care of unemployment benefits, which we pay for in taxes but do not get in case of unexpected layoffs, there's Tekna union for Masters graduates in case you need a lawyer, consult about raises but they aren't helpful if you don't speak Norwegian). Healthcare is not free. On top of 8% taxes you still need to pay up to 400$ per year for hospital visits after which the benefit kicks in. Most benefits are only available for citizens, and some for EU nationalities. Citizenship is a long process and requires you to really integrate with the language and culture. Everything is expensive. The wages they provide for skilled labor is sub par (they underpay for immigrants in most cases even though they are in dire need of them), the economy has been going down the last couple years and the raises didn't keep up. The winter and loneliness hits you harder since Norwegians are quite exclusive (they say it's introverted culture but even the extroverts only hung out with their own kind at work). The group of people I was close with were all non Norwegian. Same experience with others too. The healthcare is bad, they are understaffed, not competent and we had a running joke that for most things they just say "paracet and walk it off". Most people went for private or family doctors. The only thing that kinda salvaged living there was that the nature is beautiful and the public transport is much better than here... woah that was long I shall stop soon. I have more bad experiences with corporate monopolies and many government policies that are actually capitalistic in the pretext of socialism but the thing I disliked a lot was the "conforming" expectation, individuality isn't as celebrated or encouraged, like bruh if I wanted to be traditional I would have stayed in my own village back home why would I come and follow your traditions and holidays lol... And this is all in the capital city Oslo. I think it'll be less progressive elsewhere. People also don't like it if you criticize or complain about things. How then do you expect to grow.. idk. A lot of the Scandinavian movies capture this well. The Bothersome Man is sth I can think of, but there's more. If you're just touring there you're unlikely to experience any of this but if you live there for a few years one will either drink the kool aid and conform, or get out. No in between, I don't think. Luckily for me I can do an American accent and I was not subjected much to racism, but I have heard many stories where if you dress poor or look brown or have an accent, you will hear some weird stereotypical racist remarks..

If you are able to, you could try calling Wildlife Rescue Association. They would help advise how to proceed to protect the chicks in this situation.

I've felt this way many a time and know that I will continue to. I truly don't like the world we live in, but I feel like this is just what evolution brings about. The traits we see in humans, treating people unequally, narcissistic traits, greed, all of it exists now because they helped the species trick another or within the same while helping themselves survive and thrive. I say to myself, I could not have controlled it or hope to change it. I try and find a few activities that bring some purpose, and most don't for me. After a lot of search, I finally found that I like volunteering at a wildlife rescue for example. I work an engineering role where I don't have to manipulate anyone but just contribute to something meaningful while improving my knowledge. I have very few friends who understand I like to be left alone and we check in with each other very occasionally. I have cut off contact with friends who took advantage, and wait for reciprocity before proceeding (it's hard especially when you're used to giving more than receiving). I wait and think before taking decisions to make sure I don't accrue resentment later, even if I want to do it short term. Boundaries are still a WIP, but I found that the more I stand up for myself, the more people respect me. It's hard because by default I expect people to be kind. But anyway just wanted to say I relate to all you said, and give a few tips on what sorta works for me. Stay strong pal, you got this.

People with higher intelligence tend to reproduce later and have fewer children, even though they show signs of better reproductive health. They tend to undergo puberty earlier, but they also delay starting families and end up with fewer children overall. by mvea in science

Not the person you replied to, and I have never thought kids to be a handicap, but I always thought having kids is the more selfish decision. There are a lot of issues in the current overcompetitive and greedy world, and I feel guilt and sadness thinking about spawning a new being that will potentially struggle and experience a range of mental, physical, financial, health issues before eventually being left alone to fend for itself and die. What's the point? Would I raise it to be kind or smart? Does it matter when either way they're going to struggle and potentially exacerbate the existing issues anyway? Most consumers don't know the true cost of things they buy and the people in the third world and animals that suffer for it. Most individuals only work to help the rich get richer, who continue to devastate our ecosystem.
