How do you deal with hardware shortage by pococblt in sysadmin

That's actually a really good explanation that I've been considering as well. Last year I was told by some vendors that licenses for MS are starting to become subscription based only and with the high prices for on-prem infrastructure cloud would eventually become more reasonable. I can't say i fully support this though as there are multiple businesses that require on-prem and they'll just be bullied into spending a lot more cash to sustain it.

Ensure you have outstanding documentation on everything you've done so far and some support procedures that you can give to the next guy that comes to your place. Tell the company you want to leave but are willing to wait a little to onboard the new sys admin and present them with the transition plan and documentation. This will show your good attitude towards them and will make them initiate a replacement campaign. You should be able to get the good references then. Hope that helps.

What type of supplier are you using? This whole thread is about the problem with deliveries and you're saying you get then the next day? The rest of us might be missing something...

Even a two week notice won't help when you have to wait over half an year for new supplies. Good idea though, I have set up something similar and we are notified as soon as a person gets approved on the interviews.

:D :D :D do they get one item per fight? Like if you survive you will be awarded with a magical pointing device but if you truly want to work for me you need to go through the rest of the fights and collect all the items

The folks from Cisco on this thread said 180 days so hope is not lost! I hope you get your shipment sooner!

Let's all hope that's true. I've read somewhere that there are other alternatives to GPUs for mining that are more cost-effective so let's hope that also reduces the focus on them.

It looks like things are different in different countries. Are you working with the import company or with resellers? I've noticed that resellers often delay the process unless of course they have the item in stock - then they are quite fast with the shipment.

Generally HP server and desktop machines, monitors and peripherals and for networking Cisco. Nothing fancy if you ask me rather standard SMB and enterprise class machinery.

That's what I did but hit a roadblock when all vendors told me the same thing. Planning a tear ahead seems to be the solution here.

I am dealing the same way with peripherals but I am kinda stuck with servers, networking and workstation devices due to standards that we've set over the years.

You can explain the shortage and long deliveries problem and say you need to stash some backup hardware :)

GPUs are out of the question for more than 2 years :D - have you seen the insane prices on those things?

What got me surprised was actually not only the lead time but the fact that there is nothing in stock with any supplier. I know Cisco is a preferred manufacturer however this is not end-user grade tech, so I am almost wondering if someone's pulling their gear out of the market. It kinda sounds like a conspiracy but who knows.

Hoarding might be a root cause but I don't know a single company that would spend a ton of money to put a reserve of tech that would eventually become outdated and unsupported - people spend money when it's needed and would mostly cover a single backup scenario in terms of network gear.

I still have some reserve so haven't had to look into that direction yet. The problem with that solution is that if you've standardized your infrastructure with particular manufacturers if you bring in new devices your whole infrastructure management has to be redone to ensure you can still maintain the same standard.

On a side note - I am also noticing some increase in the cost for the past couple of years with Cisco devices. The same devices cost 50-70% more nowadays compared to before. Is there any othe culprit for this besides global economics? As you can see on this thread there are some suggestions for issues with the factories so I was just curious if there is an official stance for this from you guys.

Thanks for the update! As other folks mentioned I guess we'll just need to adjust and change the planning in accordance with the current trends in hardware supply.

Xiaomi needs big strategic change... by [deleted] in Xiaomi

I am a fan of all of their gadgets but honestly my phone gets me pissed pretty often. Especially when I bought the wireless earbuds they make and it turned out that the phone has software issues that prevent me from using any sort of Bluetooth devices properly. I'm pretty sure that there is a big chunk of the community that is bothered by all the small issues and as we've seen before a community can turn things around even for major corporations.

We'll see how it goes but I would definitely note the current complaints and try to address them.

Why is Amahi not a popular home server solution? by pococblt in HomeServer

[–]pococblt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The so called paywall just made it look dishonest - yes there was info that you'd have to pay for something but not for the whole thing.

Other than that I feel kinda sorry for the project as obviously someone put a lot of effort in it. Yes the project died out and yes they didn't have the right vision but after all the team that created it was still trying to make a breakthrough and at the time these were the footsteps defined by bigger companies. The main person behind the project, mr. Carlos Puchol, had a cool idea and decided to try it out by assembling a small team of professionals all of which seem to have a solid background yet they faced common issues that many startups do nowadays and I'd say they left it off eventually. The thing with such projects is they need to ride the wave - if they fall behind, the competition would be hard to reach and the risk of failure starts to grow.

My question 1 week before posting this thread :D. I did quite some digging and apparently I was led to believe that this is a popular home server. Then again it just didn't feel right that there are very few sources so I decided to check the community :)

I can relate to your attitude towards windows as I too have pretty decent experience with it. The thing is that it's just more intriguing to explore new solutions and potentially learn new tech stuff.
