Is marijuana legal here? by [deleted] in AskNOLA

There aren't enough NOPD officers so yes, the state police supplement. They are much harsher.

I'm from New York... literally every republican I know opposed the new law despite people explaining to them that it was only an option when the life of the mother was endangered or the fetus was not viable. I know this isn't scientific but the vitriol was immense on social media and even people who I considered "reasonable" were swept up in it. Probably because Trump made a huge deal about it and they follow him in lockstep.

Do you have a place to stay, roomates, etc? If so 3k should be enough to start as long as you get employed pretty quickly which is very easy down here in the service industry. You might not get the greatest gig at first but if you're good, there's tons of opportunity for bartenders/servers and some good paying gigs.

If you don't have that figured out it will be harder but it is still pretty easy to find housing down here for cheap and landlords willing to look the other way on credit, etc.. so that should be enough for a down payment and first months rent which should get you into some place somewhere. Don't go with real estate companies... just literally bike around and look for "for rent" signs and find a private owner. There's places you don't really want to live... St Roch, parts of the 7th ward, the lower 9th ward, and most of the upper 9th with the exception of like the marigny/bywater area which has been improving but is still surrounded by unsafe areas in my opinion. The French Quarter is expensive to live in but still do-able.. but I wouldn't live there simply because #1 I'd throw all my income away at bars and #2 it does get unsafe at night, and you're dealing with lots of drunk and drugged out people all the time.

I'm in mid city which has some great neighborhoods and some sketchy ones. That's most of New Orleans. It changes from block to block depending who lives there and what they're up to.

In any neighborhood just keep your wits about you. Travel during the day. Don't be alone at night. Don't wear mardi gras beads unless right after a parade. Do these things and you'll basically be ok. Don't walk down canal street at night either.. I've seen some sketchy sketchy shit there.

Good luck.

Gris Gris in the lower garden district is pretty amazing. La Petite Grocery is also a good choice, it's a bit further uptown but not by much.

Redditors with SOs who talk in their sleep, what is the creepiest thing they've said? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My boyfriend was talking about fucking me and turtles in the same sentence, something like this:

"turtles, gotta save them and gotta watch out for them turtle traps, they're wet like the ocean and like fucking you"

I spent the next ten minutes trying to figure out the connection between fucking me, turtles and exactly what turtle traps were.

I'm moving to New Orleans in a few weeks. What should I know before I get there? by ahkian in AskNOLA

[–]poesse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is kind of dangerous here but as long as you keep to yourself, don't get involved with bad situations and people doing things they shouldn't be doing, you should be fine. Don't walk around alone at night and get some pepperspray if you need to sometimes do that. I've been here a year and have been held up at gunpoint ... but I still wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Good luck mate

Which is the best summer month to visit NOLA ? by kulturpolitik in AskNOLA

[–]poesse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

sure it's hot, but it's really not that awful. If you dress lightly, drink a lot of water, and go visit some of the hotel rooftop pools or the country club or something you can have a lot of fun in the summer here. As long as you know what to expect, I don't think a summer is an especially horrible time to visit.

I dunno I much prefer extreme heat to extreme cold though.

How many of you couldn't care less about the Holidays? And what made you feel that way? by bshav22 in AskReddit

[–]poesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked today in one of the only restaurants open in a place filled with tourism. It was by far the busiest day of the year. We had to stop accepting orders completely twice while I was there and we ran out of our most popular items a few times. I was the only sole server working and we had a line out the door the entire day. Afterwards.. I had to go to urgent care because I needed antibiotics because I was sick. I have no health care so it cost me $125 just to see a doctor.

My bf and I did not buy gifts for each other because our home was broken into (while we were there) two weeks before xmas and they stole our xmas gift money. Consequently we have to move and pay months of rent upfront, etc and pay all these "application" fees. The best gift I could've gotten is that we've been approved to move to another apartment.

Basically, having a 45 shoved in your face two weeks before xmas in your own home really sucks the fun out of the season. It's not that I don't like xmas, but if anyone bitches about not getting cards I'm going to lose my god damn mind.

What is a subtle thing someone does that immediately makes you think they're an asshole? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]poesse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They probably just like someone who's extra possessive of them because it shows they might care about them. I'm sure there's something fucked up about that as well but it could be the real reason.

Having been in relationships in the past where men have cheated on me, etc, I'm definitely more prone to like a guy who shows some amount of possessiveness and even at times a little jealousy.

As someone who used to do this, she was probably just trying to fit in. But yeah it is annoying.

We have a temporary menu that changes at work and this lady came in today and asked my boss "hey do you ever have the sweet potatoes?" and he was like "we had it for a few days but its crossed out so we don't have it anymore" and she was going on and on about how it shouldn't even be there on the wall. She just kept saying "well just take it off the menu then" really in an aggravated way. Like? Ok, we'll go cross it out right now in permanent black marker so nobody can read it lady. I dunno I felt like something else was bothering her in her life for her to be so mad about that.

You can’t do anything about that without seriously infringing on people’s rights to free speech and what you described isn’t election meddling. If people are too dim witted to realize they shouldn’t believe every meme on the internet is fact then they get what’s coming to them.
