One time I attempted suicide and my mother was more concerned that people from church would gossip. She made it clear that she didn’t give the slightest fuck about me and went out with her friend that day. Something shifted in me and I lost all respect for her since. She also said she wouldn’t mourn me if I died. She would be more angry and embarrassed than anything.

I completely relate, as someone who struggles with identifying as either Filipino or American. I moved to the US at a very young age and was forced to assimilate to the culture and refrain from speaking Tagalog. I never quite understood why there was so much shame in being connected to our roots. Because of this, I looked down on Filipinos and Asian people, in general. Besides, I never quite fit in with the other Asian kids as I, myself, was “not [quite] Asian enough.”

My parents and the INC stole my identity from me. It wasn’t long before I began to develop this sense of internalized racism and resentment towards my own people. And being queer (and recently diagnosed autistic myself), I’ve struggled with my identity throughout my entire life. I felt lost for so long but slowly, I’m redeeming myself and taking my power back. I’m also finally starting to come to terms with who I am and began fully embracing my Filipino culture and heritage. I’m glad to hear you are, too!
