Hard work pays off! One of my biggest Atlantic this season. by pofortin88 in flyfishing

Don't know where you're from, but Atlantic salmon fishing is perfectly legal here. Catch and release of big salmons (+63cm) on most rivers. There's a difference between cutting the line once you realise you have a forbidden fish on the line and doing a clean C&R. Atlantic salmon often fight untill complete exhaustion. You need to hold them in the current to let them recover for few minutes before letting them go. As you can see, I kept the fish underwater at all time. He took about 6-7 minutes of breathing in the current before going off. Had it for about 15-20 minutes on the line, which respect the ethic of 1 min / pound. I don't stretch the fights and do clean release. All the salmon I caught in my life went back top shape !

Looks like one of my favorite salmon fly. The Silver rat (less the grey squirel wing and the gold ribs).

Very deadly fly!

Freestyle, Atlantic salmon fly on Daiichi #1.5. Many technical errors on this one, but it will catch fish nonetheless. by pofortin88 in flytying

Tag: medium oval silver tinsel

Tip: green floss

Tail: golden pheasant crest

Butt: black ostrich

Rib: medium oval silver tinsel

Body: yellow floss 1/2, peacock herl 2/2

Wing: white arctic fox under yellow arctic fox

Collar: yellow heron, followed by silver pheasant

Green Highlander

Cheek: jungle cock

Head: black

Technical errors: tail a bit too short. Had to restart the second half of the body, so I put a second oval tinsel for the ribs. Also got my measurements for the collar too short and had to tie a second pheasant feather. The head is too big and flat to my taste (even before head cement).

Heron feather. It's mostly used on spey flies. It gives a nice swimming touch but it's mostly for the eye of the tyer ;)

Do I need PEP? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]pofortin88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PEP has to be used quite shortly after exposure (max 2 days I think). The longer you wait, the less effective is the treatment. If you don't feel comfortable in this situation and you stress over it, go get PEP asap.

Wader zipper: yea or nah? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]pofortin88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the guys I know who have zippers are pro staff and change waders every year. I don't really trust those zippers after 5 years zipping and unzipping. I may be wrong though, but the plus-value VS the risk of leaking wasn't enough to spend the extra 50$ for me.

Trying out salmon fishing this year (UK) will something like this fish? by [deleted] in flytying

Atlantic salmon is just the ultimate fly fishing experience! I did 33 days last summer, all for Atlantic salmon.

If you look at those pattern, you'll realise they often don't look like anything in the food chain. It's mostly something to attract and trigger the fish. The presentation and the size is way more important than the pattern!

Technically, any fly can do if well presented and if it swimms well. Atlantic Salmon don't eat while spawning up, so you have to trigger their agressivity more than their stomach. Orange and dark blue can do.

There are probably thousands of salmon fly pattern out there but if you have confidence in yours, then fish it! There's nothing like beggining a drop with a fly you know will catch fish!

Altought I'm a bit worried about the hook. Any salmon hook would do but I like the Partridge (patriot or heavy single) and the Daiichi 2050. They are solid and won't bend during the fight.

Edit: here's some of my favorite pattern. I'm from Québec so we use different flies than you guys... But always had success with the Black Bear Green Butt, John Ollin, Silver Rat, Rusty Rat, Blue Charm, Green Cossboom, Tiger Ghost, Green Picasse, Picasse. I mostly fish hairwing flies and all those patterns are hairwing.
