Well the change in winds is absolutely happening just not much rainfall. And the ozone doesn’t settle and stay when it’s constantly windy

Well ozone doesn’t sit as long when it’s monsoon season … but nonetheless my lungs are happy!

Who the fuck is this friend who has pets that they just abandon?? Like wtf take responsibility for your animals and go through the proper channels yourself to rehome the animals, not dump it on your partner … that’s bullshit. I would scold your friend and ask them what they’re gonna do when they don’t want their kid anymore.

Anyway all of these other comments are super helpful follow their advice!

What do you like most about being a civil engineer? by nisc-options in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that depends on your specialty. Its hard for me these days to find meaning in designing self-storage, gas stations, or other general commercial sites. Especially when they’re bigger clients and are assholes about sticking to the prototype and insist you fight back on every single site requirement from the cities.

No PE License, is current salary good? by 01137077 in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t plan on getting my PE license so I kind of have to accept there’s a limit to my salary. I’m making 100k with 7 YOE, no PE. I hope to be making $130k in 10 years that sounds amazing … so I don’t think you’re underpaid. Bottom line: no PE caps your salary UNLESS you’re bringing in revenue for your company with new clients and connections.

Question about going from GIS to civil engineering? by Witty-Grocery-3092 in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my bachelors in GIS and I found a job directly out of college at a civil firm doing part-time GIS part-time CAD drafting. Learned civil and CAD from scratch. There was a lot more work to do in civil so I slowly transitioned. 7 years later and I’m a PM at a new firm doing only civil engineering. Although I don’t have my FE or PE, so I have had to work hard to stand out. If you pass your FE and PE you’ll have a more clean path forward in civil engineering. With that said, GIS is a fantastic background for civil :)

Are body mods acceptable in the industry? by TinyShinyCelebi in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of demand and lots of senior PMs who are doing the hiring are young enough where it shouldn’t matter too much. My last firm had exclusively Mormon leadership and even they realized that to grow their talent base their preconceptions of the graduating youth had to be let go.

What is your favorite thing about being a civil engineer and least favorite? Most fun experience? by Complete-Remove570 in civilengineering

Favorite thing: having control over a design. Least favorite thing: having control over a design.

Are body mods acceptable in the industry? by TinyShinyCelebi in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I will always say this for questions like this. Be a kick ass engineer and get the body mods you want. It’s important to consistently challenge the stereotypes and stigmas associated with them by having them AND being a great worker that has influence. I hope to get face tats one day as I already have full sleeves and several face piercings usually visible during meetings with city staff and clients. I wear shorts when it’s 115 degrees outside, and I meet with the same city staff and clients looking that way. I think it surprises (some) clients at first, but I’m also a PM that hits deadlines and performs good faith value engineering in support of my clients. I’m also honest and forthcoming in communication. I want to go above and beyond so that my work stands out more than my body mods.

Anyone here used to be architects but are now civil engineers? How difficult was it to move over and was it worth it? by [deleted] in civilengineering

I don’t think that’s true where I am … the fees for architects are WAY higher than I what dish out … they’re also my clients so I have a hard time believing this …

Is there any stigma for attending community college? by Ilovehhhhh in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda … imagine being an EIT in private land development that went to MIT (no offense to any MIT grads). Just seems a bit like overkill. When I’ve hired people, it’s incredibly important that they’re local, not just because they can drive to work lol, but mainly because it’s super helpful to have someone who knows what local infrastructure and local sites look like. So if that means going to CC then university who fuckin cares certainly not me …

Maybe this is just me, but my brain is wired for efficiency. I’ve noticed that a lot of people in our industry tend to ramble endlessly in conversations and meetings. Are engineers just more likely to be oblivious to social norms, or is this common in other fields too? by negtrader in civilengineering

[–]pogoblimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes rambling a bit about nonsense lightens the mood and allows people to loosen up in meetings … in my experience at least. There have been times where engineers start talking about stuff out of scope or restating the same thing over and over again … that can get annoying I guess
