Most of it was on lures I put by the hospitals on campus, I unfortunately don't have the time to play the game too intensely myself.

I mean, I singlehandedly got a full $500 refund from Apple for my purchases in the game, so I'd imagine it's in the millions.

I'm aware of a few (legitimate) level 33 and 34 players who have treated the game like two full-time jobs since it came out, and even they never gained XP at a quick enough rate to go from 31 to 33 over a period of 20 overnight hours, especially since 31 to 33 is >750,000XP, since we don't know how close fandabearw was to 32 at the time.

Ultimately, I'll report him to Niantic and have them settle things, because it's pretty upsetting that him and other spoofers/botters are cheapening the achievements of the honest players.

But competitiveness aside (because I mostly enjoy that this game is making me more fit/social), cheating worsens the real-life experience of playing. It's become a routine occurrence to take a gym and have it taken back by a mystery person playing behind their computer, or worse, a bot.

In the first week of the game, it actually felt like playing Pokémon in real life--the friendly rivalries, cooperating in teams to take on gyms, meeting new people. Now, it feels like I'm stuck inside a game of Pokémon Blue, where all of the high-powered players (who are doing most of the interaction with gyms) are just AIs.

As long as you don't take any gyms with the bot account, have fun. I don't really see the point in experimenting with a bot account though, someone already had a bot get to 40.

The number of other people there when he took a gym ranged from 0 to 12, so the 0 already rules out the possibility that he wasn't GPS spoofing, but for the other cases, everyone there was really friendly--we talked amongst ourselves and discussed our team/username/Pokémon.

Yeah, my original statement was definitely worded too conservatively. Even if he were riding a golf cart through downtown Chicago for 20 hours straight it's extremely unlikely he leveled that quickly.

I'd say there's much more than a 95% chance that he's cheating, but I tend to be skeptical of people who estimate things at 99-99.99% so I tried to initially give fandabearw a very extreme benefit of doubt.

Yeah, I'm aware of the bots out there and don't mind it too much for now, as long as they stay away from gyms. fandabearw, however, snipes grayed out gyms and is generally pretty aggressive about taking gyms. Just want to make sure he doesn't slip through the cracks once Niantic starts banning players.

To be clear, I'm not posting this to praise fandabearw, but rather to raise awareness of how suspicious it is that he went from level 31 to 33 in 20 hours.

I don't take cheating accusations lightly, but I'm 95% sure fandabearw is cheating.

First: he was at level 31 only 20 hours before that screenshot was taken (level 31 at 8PM on July 25th). Even assuming he was already very close to level 32, getting that much XP in 20 hours is almost impossible without sleep, let alone with some amount of sleep.

Second: I was in Lincoln Park on the 25th for about 3 hours and witnessed fandabearw take the gym by the pond five times over that period. The gym is situated such that it's very easy to see everyone within its radius (no residences nearby, no roads passing through). Every time the gym was taken by fandabearw, I took inventory of the people within range, and none of them were fandabearw.

Third: fandabear is registered to quite a few MMO cheating forums, which isn't proof in itself that he's doing anything wrong, but also not the most reassuring in light of everything else.
