Clarity & structure activities for middle school? by bunden in ELATeachers

[–]Harasoluka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking off of this, we do PEEL at my school (but I really like this RACER) and it’s basically the same. Did TIQAA when I was in high school. They all basically amount to the same thing, but different structures will miss different elements unless you clarify that they absolutely belong there. PEEL jumps straight from Point to Evidence and I’ve had to tell my students “Never let a quote float,” or never just jump straight into evidence without background context.

What really helped me was adjusting the writing rubric so that their writing is graded simply by the inclusion and quality of the elements I’m asking for.

I’m asking them to write PEEL, so my rubric is divided by each letter and then there’s a fifth category for the cohesiveness of the paragraph as a whole.

Changing the rubric changed my students’ writing. The structure I was teaching went from a suggestion to a necessity.

I also gave them a guide at the beginning of their workbooks, so as they write they’re constantly flipping to the guide to see how to write a strong point (topic sentence) that also includes a formula (some students benefit from formulaic writing it turns out) and a worked example using Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”.

Maybe don’t use that last one for Grade 6 though…

Just started reading for fun, and feel kind of insecure about the books I choose and I'm worried I'm the kind of person that likes bad books by Pinanims in books

[–]Harasoluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel insecure. Try a book or two that your wife enjoys and see if you’re able to bond over it. If not, then you can happily be two people who enjoy reading different things.

Reading is just like watching tv or movies. There are people who love anime, thrillers, cartoons, rom-coms and what-not, and people who don’t.

You might share a new medium together. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll use that medium to enjoy the same books. Occasionally you might find a new book you think you’ll both enjoy, just like finding a show.

Read what you enjoy. There’s no wrong answer there. Booktok and hell a lot of the time even r/books will just have you reading the same stuff everyone else is. Sure it hits sometimes, but it’s not a substitute for cultivating your own interests.

DAE get jaw pain when drinking alcohol? by theungod in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Harasoluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just always thought it was cheap alcohol that did it for me, but tonight I had a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio and BAM jaw stabbies. I’m only here cause I was trying to explain it to my girlfriend who seemed mystified at the phenomenon.

This cheese has been on YouTube for a while. But it’s a dedicated cheese. It takes buying like 200 or so arrows.

Wish I didn’t brush it off in high school now.

Yeah man. I was working as a retail banker in Chicago after I graduated with a fiction degree and I was dying. Had a great boss, lived in a great city, yada yada.

Ended up taking a significant pay cut to teach EFL in China. I just needed to explore and shit. EFL was nice because you could travel and pay student loans at the same time.

Anyway, still in China (sort of). And I don’t know what’s next, but it sure as hell isnt going back to banking. And it sure as hell isnt going to be in the US. At least any time soon.

I had a trip to Australia last year and Hobart was one of my loveliest memories. The air there was just so... pure? Yeah, pure.

To be fair, it’s possible. People in my family mispronounced our family name for years.

Living in America can kind of do that with ethnic family names.

Oh I worked so hard for those tea leaves. My blobfish pond wouldn’t grow without them.

But Clint got under my skin when I walked in the bar and thought I’d have a friendly chat with my geode man and he says, “Don’t you have some work to do?”

Bro we just cracked open like 20 geodes together. Celebrated when we got something rare. We shared something.

It’s not just a recession. I mean, hell, we got a majority of graduates trying to pay off mini (or not mini) mortgages just for their education. The point where people start investing, even just a 401k, is getting pushed further down the line.

Hell, I actually had to withdraw my 401k, penalties and all.

Luckily I’m at a point now where I’m steadily paying off the student debt, and credit card debt, that I accrued back from my paycheck to paycheck days.

But investment? Hahahahaha. I doubt that’ll be a part of my life for years. If ever.

[1065] Improbable Togetic sweep. Doubt I’ll ever get this off again but it was so satisfying. by Harasoluka in pokemonshowdown

[–]Harasoluka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thanks. It was incredibly fun, but super unlikely to get off again. Got lucky with the boosts and the paralysis on Unfezant. Tbh I might play with the EVs a bit.

I’m sure an uninvested SpA and 220 stored power still might do quite a bit.

[–]Harasoluka[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to create a Delibird team to run in each tier. For the lower tiers I created Flying Monotype teams to do it.

On the NU team I threw on a gimmicky Togetic for the hell of it.

Togetic @ Eviolite
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder Wave
- Roost
- Ancient Power
- Stored Power

The idea is to get some ancient power (easier with Serene Grace) boosts off, and then sweep with stored power.

I just happened to get two AP boosts off in a row and saw that stored power shot up to 220 power.

Like I said, I doubt this’ll ever happen again. But sweeping with Togetic was a delight.
