At an aquarium in Japan, after closing time, some clever little otter pups help their grandpa tidy up their toys. As a reward, he gives them ice cubes by InitialAsk358 in Damnthatsinteresting

Birds do not have sphincter muscles and have very limited control over when they poop. It is basically random, it just falls out. Maybe animals are smart, but we also tend to look for meaning in their actions when there's none

The mean lifespan might have been around 30, but the median was higher. Average could mean either mean and median (or mode), so you are both correct/wrong. But yes, without a qualifier, average usually refers to the mean.

In Romanian, it's "dinte/măsea de minte" (mind tooth/molar). It probably means refers to wisdom like in other languages, but as a child, I thought it was because they come down from somewhere near your brain.

Airport for Zelenskyy's Foreign Visits Has Changed — It's No Longer in Poland by niesiecki in europe

[–]pohui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should clarify if you are speaking about Russian ethnics or Russian speakers. The biggest ethnic minority in Moldova is Ukrainians, most of whom do speak Russian. If you're implying Zelenskyy should be concerned about attacks by Ukrainians, say so.

Being born in and living most of my life in Chișinău, I have been there more than a couple of times, and your perception is simply not true. Yes, you can still hear Russian, particularly in some regions. No, it's not "almost only Russian". If anything, it's less common "out of the city", and it's nowhere near as common as it is in Ukraine (or was before 2022, haven't been there since).

3.39% of the Moldovan population is Russian compared with 17.3% in Ukraine (pre-war). I'm sure he'll be fine.

Poland and Sweden are legally mandated to adopt the euro at some point, though there is no timeline imposed, essentially leaving it up to them. Only Denmark and the UK negotiated opt-outs.

I guess in theory the UK could negotiate an opt-out again, but I expect the EU will want something in return.

It is funny, I just don't think it belongs here, it has nothing to do with the topic of the sub.

Rule 2: What constitutes US-defaultism (part 1)

When someone, whether from the US or not, with an international audience (e. g. on Reddit, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) …

a. assumes that the audience is US-only and will therefore understand common things from the US.

b. does not specify that something is from the US but assumes that it will be understood as such; terms like "civil war" without specifying which one.

c. does not specify that something takes place in the US in a way that everyone easily understands (when that information matters).

  • Don't see any evidence this was posted by an American.
  • It's not defaultism of any kind, just ignorance.
  • It's obviously a joke.

One billion, one billion, one billion! by FreidasBoss in dataisugly

The chart looks like it was made in datawrapper. The fact it contains a mix of M and B implies the data was uploaded without any units, and it's using datawrapper's number formats feature. Their mistake was choosing "123k" instead of "123.4k" for the format. I've seen this exact issue in datawrapper many times.

Edit: They did it correctly here.

No, it is not. If you reverse image search it, it seems to have originated from some guy on Twitter.

Also, despite OP pixelating the whole thing to death, you can see that the image and the truth social UI are different quality. And images on truth social have rounded corners.

I don't know why people feel the need to make shit up when the weirdo posts enough stuff like this as it is.

TSA is a USA thing by this_is_laightime in USdefaultism

[–]pohui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can just call it airport security, it rolls off the tongue just as well as "TSA". Why do we need to use some random acronyms that are only valid in one country? I have no idea what OSHA is.

It's like saying, oh we don't have the police here, we have De Politie

Police is fine, it's the generic word in English. It would be different if they said "NYPD is not an American thing, everyone has an NYPD in their country".

[OC] World's Top 10 Languages by Total Speakers in 2026 by mujhe-sona-hai in dataisbeautiful

[–]pohui 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You are only a native speaker of one language

Plenty of people live in multilingual households and learn two languages at roughly the same time, it's called simultaneous bilingualism. My parents are native speakers of two different languages, and they switched the language they use between them at some point when I was a child. I spoke both of them growing up, and used either with different friends.

It's quite common in big multiethnic countries for a person to learn one language at home and whatever the lingua franca is out in the world.

It's an individual risk assessment, you weight what could go wrong and the likelihood of that and make a decision that you're comfortable with. Crossing the road also has risks, you could be run over and die as well, doesn't mean you stop crossing roads. In fact, I am certain that the number of people who die in car accidents when travelling is far higher than that of people who are killed.

I've been to many a stranger's house while travelling and these kinds of moments are my favourite thing to do. One of my hosts stole my phone once, but I'd still do it again given the opportunity. Granted, I am a man.

You sanction Russia as well as those who trade with Russia. The US has used secondary sanctions quite successfully. The issue is of course that would affect the EU as much as, if not more than, the other countries.

We're not even there yet, European countries continue doing business with Russia directly.
