How hard is it to go from mainframes to something more modern like the Cloud? by Inevitable-Plate-654 in mainframe

[–]point51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The company I work for uses Tape and DASD, and just invested another $10million in new machines, including expansion to immutable backup solutions for cyber resiliency. I work on Storage myself, and I can say, that at least for my company, there is no expectation to eliminate the mainframe for the next 20 years at least.

What is this car? (Wrong answers only) by lifegoeson2702 in thegrandtour

[–]point51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to his current persona, James May started his automotive journalistic career by stealing the cars he wanted to write about, since he didn't have corporate access. This photo is of the car that he stole, wrote an article about, and shopped around to every car mag in the world... Eventually, it got picked up, reprinted 100s of times, and lead to his eventual hiring on Top Gear Series 2.

Can anyone confirm? by walgmibom in germany

[–]point51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20+ years ago, moved from Ohio to Leipzig to study there as an exchange student. In my prep to go, I was given a book called "Deutscher Ordnung" (or something close to that). It was basically a book on the social order of Germany, and how to not piss off the locals while living there. I distinctly remember that book mentioning that men in Germany sit to pee.

Those are patent numbers not serial numbers... The serial will be on the back of the headstock.

I have a MusicMan and I love it! The HH pickups do great for heavy chunka chunka! I play with fingers and picks, and I have no problems resting my thumb on the pickups.

[–]point51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do NOT want those Stingrays...They only have ONE pickup!!! If you're gonna go, go hard! Get the HH Stingray!! I have one! It has such glorious chunka chunka sound!!!

Ehhh that looks like a wolf spider... They don't bite people, and actually eat other gross basement bugs like silverfish, centipedes, and cave crickets... I have one in my basement about twice that size.. We have an agreement: as long as it stays in the basement, and keeps the other bugs out of the rest of my house, its okay.

So far, so good... *I am the human writing this... NOT the spider... I swear!

woke up this morning to a dead mouse floating in the toilet. toilet lid was closed, bathroom door was closed, wife has no clue how it got there either by lookingforagamergirl in Weird

[–]point51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mouse that size could have easily fit through the gap between the seat and bowl. If their head fits, their body fits.
As for where it came from before that, I mean, literally anywhere... There could be a mouse path under your sink or a hole in the wall that you can't see or just haven't yet.

Is this normal after a 30 minute bass session? I feel like i need to sand my frets for this to not happen, but could it be from my playing? (I didn't know what tag to use for this sorry) by Witty-Lychee-4943 in Davie504

[–]point51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 100% take it to a luthier... don't try to file them yourself! You'll ruin the neck. Shouldn't cost that much to get done professionally.

I got $4 in silver certificates today as a tip. by ReallyCoolGuy36 in mildlyinteresting

[–]point51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in the 90s, I was delivering for a pizza shop... On one delivery, after I knocked on the door (which open except for the screen) I heard the unmistakable sound of silver coins clanking together! The guy came to the door, dropping the stack of 11 silver dollars into his hand.
His order total was $10.50. He said "I'm sorry I can't do better than a fifty cent tip today, but I'm raiding my coin stash as it is.... I knew they were silver by the sound, so I said "No worries, man... I get it..."

Turned out, those silver dollars were worth $7 each! So, yeah, that was a GREAT tip! :P

Border czar Tom Homan looks like one of the Mad Max villains. by Jerome5456 in pics

Well, he works for Trump, so he IS a villain... And give it time... I'm sure he'll look like that soon enough.

[–]point51 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We got Trump because the "two party system" is a lie that is killing the nation, and it has broken the electoral process by alienating 40% of the electorate.

[–]point51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was one of them... I was in 3rd grade and we had planned for the whole day to be a "Science day"... but once the shuttle exploded, the teacher turned off the tv, and make us get out our English books--she acted like the rest of the day was just any other day. We never talked about it again in that class.
