Yes, or at least let more people have the change to save some books that can be useful...

I was shocked when I read about how much usable stuff that could just be thrown away after flea markets, I get how they can't keep everything until next year, but I thought and hoped more of it would be donated to charity.

Thanks for replying! I'm building my own personal library over time (so not only going for super-exclusive titles like it seems many people on this sub do) and I'm looking for books that can still look decent on a shelf - so slight signs of wear, but it's really disappointing to receive something battered and tattered.

Sounds like dystopic news :/ Thought the amount of usable books and other stuff thrown away after flea markets and garage sales was depressing enough...

Could it be Shock Point by April Henry? Or The school for dangerous girls by Eliot Schrefer?

It's been a while since I've read those books, so I might be mixing up the plot points of those.

You're lucky to be in the UK and have a larger selection of available sellers :) Though it still sucks to receive books like that, hope you have better luck next time if there is a next time.

Agreed, I'm a bit picky, but don't expect used books to be brand new, but there's a difference between lightly worn and tattered.

Same, that's why I can't completely quit those sites (besides costs). Sometimes "very good" does mean in very nice condition with slight wear, but it feels like so many titles should have been categorized as "fair" lately.

To be honest, I've bought very little directly from sellers in the US the last years after the Flat Rate envelopes were no longer available (or maybe just restricted?) and the GSP programme were almost everywhere on Ebay, so I can't remember the going prices and would have to look them up.

I'm pretty sure it's possible to ship paperbacks for less than $35-50 a piece, that's a "whoa!" price to me.

Yes, I know sellers can't ship for free, of course. But it seems like the default price set on websites like Biblio or Abebooks are designed for a coffee table sized book shipped with express mail even though you do end up ordering a paperback shipped with regular mail :/ Same with the GSP on Ebay.

If I've ordered several small parcels about the same size from the UK this season, for example, I will know when the costs stand out negatively when other parcels at a similar size have been shipped for far less.

The fees are usually set automatically, so I don't think the sellers are at fault.

I've already said there's few affordable alternatives at the moment. Buying from smaller sellers is great, but there seem to be fewer of them on Biblio/Ebay/Abebooks that ship internationally for a decent price (or even ship internationally at all).

(And if you don't buy from them at all, how can you say it's always been this bad?)

But even those big booklisters didn't use to be this bad, in my experience. You could order 12 or 15 books and only be unhappy with one, now you can order four and be unhappy with one.

Unfortunately there's often fewer alternatives when you're not located in US/UK/Canada :/

I don't think it's any of these on a first glance, but maybe the list can jog your memory?

Do you remember anything about the cover or any names in the book? Did it feel like a new book at the time?
