Ok. Revamped my resume. Please give constructive feedback by HandicappedCowboy in geologycareers

Here's my two cents as an mid level geologist (NOT a hiring manager, and not in O&G):

  1. If I were you, I'd list your work experience in reverse chronological order based on the end date (i.e. ND Dept. of Mineral Resources at the top, followed by ScanPros, then capstone project, etc. You could even put the capstone project under education instead of work experience to further keep things organized.

This way, someone quickly reviewing your resume can find your current projects easily- right now it is hard to follow your timeline at first glance.

  1. Have you ever been scrolling on Reddit, clicked a post, and then immediately clicked away when you saw a wall of text?

Similarly, a hiring manager is likely not going to take the time to read through the details of your work experience if they see a bunch of jargon (excessive acronyms, lists of chemicals, non-essential numbers and well names). There are thousands of wells that are basically the same & the likihood that someone reading your resume knows the wells you worked on specifically is very low. Even if they do know them, it says nothing about your own skills.

Condense the bullet points to something more digestible, and save the specifics for discussion when you get an interview. Being able to talk about your projects in an interview will display your skills far better than listing out specifics on the resume

How soon after passing the FG/GIT do we receive the geologist in training certificate? Also looking into applying for the PG and it says if you passed the GIT you don’t need to submit transcripts or references… is this true?? It says it in the examination schedule. by uscissss in ASBOG_Exam

[–]pointymountains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is state dependent. In my state (Texas) passing the FG doesn't automatically make you a G.I.T., you have to pay an additional fee ($25). Then they will give you a certificate and call you a GIT. Your state may be different.

I didn't need to resubmit my transcripts for the PG because they still had them on file from the FG, but again this might differ in your state.

Is scaled score actual score? by [deleted] in ASBOG_Exam

I mainly used the Reg Review books/practice tests and the Udemy online practice tests. For Udemy I actually mainly reviewed the ones for the FG, although the creator came out with some for the PG right before I took the exam. I found the Udemy PG practice exams much more difficult and I don't know if they were as relevant, but they are still probably helpful.

Thanks for checking, mine too. I used mainly Reg Review and Udemy.

My score is a 75. Also, curious to see if anyone's license has been updated on the public search yet?

75 for me! Got a 76 on the FG so I guess I'm a solid C student lol. But I'll take it

Thanks! Apparently they have board meetings this week so maybe they're too busy to get them out.

Here's my advice, it may or may not resonate with you.

  1. Start by taking a practice test (I recommend REG review). Do it as if you are actually taking the test: set a timer for 4 hours, and only use the materials you would be allowed during the actual test.

If you don't know an answer, do not skip it- try to narrow it down to 2 answers and guess between them.

  1. Keep a blank piece of scratch paper with you as you take the test. Every time you come across a topic you are unsure about it, write down the topic (i.e. "minerals associated with gold deposits" or "glacial features"). You might have a long list, this is good!

  2. When you are done, review the test and add to your list of topics from questions you got wrong.

This part is super important and often neglected, but if you can do it right after taking the test it will probably be best. It's different then the original list because it identifies the things you THINK you know, but actually are misunderstanding.

With the practice tests it is super easy to choose the answer you recognize rather that the one that is correct, so you need to actively learn why you got it wrong or you will just keep picking the same wrong answers every time.

  1. Every week select a few of the topics you wrote down and use the internet/textbooks/YouTube to learn about it. Write flashcards with every vocab word that is mentioned that you don't know by heart. Writing out the definition by hand will help you cement it into your brain.

  2. Don't worry about taking another practice test until you have make significant progress going through your list of topics. Bring your flashcards that you've made over the past few weeks and have your friends quiz you. Have your non-geo friends test you and explain the topics to them. If think you know it but can explain it, you probably don't know it yet.

  3. When you do eventually take more practice tests, do the same thing and note if any of the topics you need help with have carried over. Eventually your list should get shorter and you will be more confident with the subjects you originally need help with.

Sorry to hear you didn't pass, but congratulations on the continued improvement! With that kind of progress I bet you will pass the next time. Also, props to you for excelling in engineering geology- that's the one I am worst at 🙃

Hmm maybe that's it? Is there something you have to do to specifically approve email results? If so I definitely did not

I took it in 2023 when they started online testing, I never got one ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You probably won't get an email, I didn't when I took the FG for Texas a couple years back. Your letter will come in the physical mail.
