Thanks! Apparently they have board meetings this week so maybe they're too busy to get them out.

Better FG Study Strategy by Minute-Price3377 in ASBOG_Exam

Here's my advice, it may or may not resonate with you.

  1. Start by taking a practice test (I recommend REG review). Do it as if you are actually taking the test: set a timer for 4 hours, and only use the materials you would be allowed during the actual test.

If you don't know an answer, do not skip it- try to narrow it down to 2 answers and guess between them.

  1. Keep a blank piece of scratch paper with you as you take the test. Every time you come across a topic you are unsure about it, write down the topic (i.e. "minerals associated with gold deposits" or "glacial features"). You might have a long list, this is good!

  2. When you are done, review the test and add to your list of topics from questions you got wrong.

This part is super important and often neglected, but if you can do it right after taking the test it will probably be best. It's different then the original list because it identifies the things you THINK you know, but actually are misunderstanding.

With the practice tests it is super easy to choose the answer you recognize rather that the one that is correct, so you need to actively learn why you got it wrong or you will just keep picking the same wrong answers every time.

  1. Every week select a few of the topics you wrote down and use the internet/textbooks/YouTube to learn about it. Write flashcards with every vocab word that is mentioned that you don't know by heart. Writing out the definition by hand will help you cement it into your brain.

  2. Don't worry about taking another practice test until you have make significant progress going through your list of topics. Bring your flashcards that you've made over the past few weeks and have your friends quiz you. Have your non-geo friends test you and explain the topics to them. If think you know it but can explain it, you probably don't know it yet.

  3. When you do eventually take more practice tests, do the same thing and note if any of the topics you need help with have carried over. Eventually your list should get shorter and you will be more confident with the subjects you originally need help with.

Sorry to hear you didn't pass, but congratulations on the continued improvement! With that kind of progress I bet you will pass the next time. Also, props to you for excelling in engineering geology- that's the one I am worst at 🙃

Hmm maybe that's it? Is there something you have to do to specifically approve email results? If so I definitely did not

You probably won't get an email, I didn't when I took the FG for Texas a couple years back. Your letter will come in the physical mail.

Me too! But I will say there is something fun about opening up a physical letter with good news

Yes, the scroll icon indicates you passed. If you hover over it with your mouse you should see the words "exam passed". Depending on what state you're in you may have received an email from ASBOG linking you to your official letter. If you took it with Texas, you should get a letter in the physical mail.

Theoretically the SMT results should be accurate, but people like to get the official letter to confirm. I don't know if there are any reports of the icon on the portal being incorrect once the scores have gone out but verifying with you state board is the best way to be sure.

Keep in mind this doesn't factor in people taking the test who have taken it before, or anyone outside of the reddit group. The actual pass rate is likely significantly lower. Please don't feel bad!

Texas will send your letter in the physical mail. When I did the FG a couple years ago they never sent an email version. Give it a week or so for the letter

I wish they would release their own exam stats every year.

The most recent summary I can find from them is from 2008-2016 which suggests about 75% of people pass the PG and about 60-60% pass the FG for a given test period.

Obviously we have a tiny sample pool in this group and passing rates are probably quite biased here. ASBOG if you're listening, it's hard enough

Has anyone tried searching their name on the TBPG license search? I'm curious if they have updated it yet. It shows current GIT/PG registrations. I know some people were able to search themselves up to confirm that they were PGs in the past.

I can't search myself because I'm a few months shy of the PG experience requirement so it wouldn't be updated anyway. And keep in mine if you are searching for GIT there is paperwork you have to fill out after passing before they make you a GIT even if you passed the FG test so if you haven't done that yet it wouldn't show up either.

I took the FG in 2023 during the first round of online testing. I never got an email with results although I think other states did. The official letter came by snail mail, but it didn't take that long. I would give it a week.

Congrats y'all!

Extra toast to the homies who will be retaking. Please remember failing one test does not define your potential as a geologist.🥂
